LOT4NG rebuild and build up thread

Well my engine has gone pop again so thought I would do a rebuild and get as much advice as i can on the way.

Rebuild at this stage will be an extend port (street port for you yanks) depending on what is broken. What is the usual find in a blown motor? It still starts but then dies.. Probably because of the microtech it still starts?

You're basing a dead motor cause it dies after starting?

I would at least do a quickie compression test to confirm the engine is bad?

And you should also find out why this engine blew "again" so you don't blow the next one.

Poor man's compression test:

Thanks for the pics. Now I know almost exactly what the rear of my FC will look like when I shave everything for paint. And mine is white too!! And wiperless!!

Oh, yeah, what Aaron said.

i can clearly hear one rotor when cranking not much of the other. But yes i will be doing a quick compression test before I take it out just to make sure..

As to why it blew up my guess would be boost spikes which i was in the process of rectifying with an external wastegate. Upon removal of the turbo turns out the factory wastegate was very very loose and most of the time was not sealing.

Btw that link isn't working for me but i realise when testing rotory compression you look to what it spikes to while holding release valve in.

If the gate wasn't sealing, you would be building boost very slowly, not having spikes.

but the wastegate being very small on a ported motor would cause boost spikes

Yeah you blew a seal somewhere. What do you have as far as engine management? You better find out why they're popping before you rebuild it only to blow it again.

Exhaust, turbo and radiator out. What else should I take out before lifting it?

Better make sure your tune isn't what's causing you to blow motors.

Pull the wiring, unbolt the tranny and mounts, and lift 'er out.

Got motivated after i finished work yesterday and pulled the engine out in 2 hours which I didn't think was too bad for a first effort. Just lifted it with a bar.

Turns out its doesn't look pretty dropped a seal from rear rotor and it went for a little ride round the housing
