Rig up a hidden kill switch before they jack your FC! If they've got the keys, I'm sure they will put 2 and 2 together and end up taking it for a joy ride.

Dealership will cut you a new key for the original lock cylinders if you bring in your current registration. Costs about $40-$60 (I had to buy a key blank at the time, >_<). If the locks were replaced, visit a locksmith

+1 on the kill switch, or pull a few fuses from the engine bay. Take any goodies out of the FC as well.

**** bro. I had mine cut for $18. I don't live in Cali, but still.

To the o.p., Why would you leave keys in any car?

When you go to the dealership bring the registaration and your ID or they won't cut it for you. If they do then that's scary. Also let me know where you live if they don't check because I'll go look at your VIN tag through your windsheild then go to the dealer get a key cut and pick up my new RX7.

You can also take out the passenger side lock cylinder & give the numbers on it to a locksmith so they can cut you a key.

I got this reply from my local Mazda dealership too (Congressional Mazda in Rockville, MD). Evidently the style of blank is not being used on any current or recent Mazdas, so a lot of dealers don't stock the key blanks anymore. They can order them for you, which is what Congressional did. I think they gouged me about $35 for this, and they did require ID and vehicle registration. They also claimed they could no longer look up the key pattern using the four-digit number on the cylinder but were able to find it by looking up my VIN.

A locksmith is a great alternative too, especially if it's cheaper and more convenient.

From: Bye NYC. you SUCKED!
You might want to first give your local dealer a call first, give them your VIN number and ask if the original key code is even in their database.

What happen to me was that couple months ago I thought I drop my only RX-7 keys somewhere, and the car was parked outside and street cleaning starts at 11:30am. To try to avoid getting a ticket or worst case a tow, I got up at 8 am in the morning, call around all 5 dealerships in NYC asking if they have "key blanks" that would work with RX-7 S5. only 1 dealership has it. and its in bklyn. so I rushed my *** over and end up stuck in Traffic for 2 hours. finally got there. THEN to find out that the "original dealer in California" never even entered the Key code to the database 19 years ago ... so basically I got there for nothing. I bought the key anyway. went home. opened the door with hook. took the rear lock out and went to lock smith, but he couldn't do anything because starting 1990 all Auto locks have Primary/Secondary code. all he can get outa the rear trunk lock is the secondary code. Primary has 2 additional cuts and without the original key he can't make the right combination ...

I had my father to watch the car the whole time and lucky the traffic guy didnt give me a ticket.

then I got really pissed, went home and about to ******* break the Master Cylinder out (the only way to get the code), my brother came back and was like what are you doing, I have ur keys ...

I almost had an heart attack and about to beat the **** outa him, even he is older than me. **** at that time I had a thought in my mind that I really want to kill him. Jesus.

So in short, yea, just CALL DEALERSHIP FIRST AND MAKE SURE THEY HAVE UR KEYCODE IN THE DATABASE FIRST!

(P.S.: now the original key is in a safe place, I bought 2 additional Mazda Primary keys"the one covered in black plastic with Mazda embedded on it", got it cut. and I use those only)

This*
1.Buy FC.
2.Make copy of key.
3.Leave one copy of key in a "safe place".
4.Drive FC.

Next time, come down to Malloy in Woodbridge, VA... Ray Crowe stocks any RX-7 part.

I know, and I've been buying all my parts from Ray for about three years. My run-in with Congressional Mazda happened just before I found out about Ray. In fact, when I told him the story he cut me another extra key on a genuine Mazda blank and threw it in with my next parts order.
