And why do you have to wait 20 minutes for cool air? Mine works immediately.

No need for A/C???
I've been to San Antonio. I could probably do without A/C, if I had to, there. Why be macho? Here in Phoenix, when the temperature hits 117 degrees and the sunlight is coming in through the windshield, the interior trim panels can reach 160-180 degrees in the summer. Why subject yourself to that, if you don't have to? If you have to worry about a few extra pounds when you race, you should have two cars. One to race and one to drive.
If you're asking for more than $500.00 for a used car, here in Phoenix, the damn thing better have A/C or it won't sell!

You guys are neglecting those with busted AC systems. My AC "no worky", and I'm pretty sure either the compressor is toasted or there is a leak in the lines. I bought my car last June, and made it through a Virginia summer just fine... that sucker's getting ripped out soon, as is the PS, I like the empty engine bay look.

Busted A/C
Didn't mean to leave anyone out. When something stops working, you have to determine if you REALLY want it or not. When we got my wife's RX7 the driver's window switch was toasted. We decided that it was worth the $158.00 to replace the switch console on the driver's door.
Here in Phoenix, it is worth the bucks and the time to keep the A/C working. That's why I convert my cars to R134a as soon as I can. I used to be a Toyota mechanic and installed and repaired A/C. All it costs me is the parts. Since I am not licensed for R12, I save money by doing a proper conversion (not just a fluid kit for $40). Once they're converted, the R134a systems in my cars have been lasting for 4+ years now with no maintenance. I might even balk at the thought of $800 or more to have someone repair my A/C.
To each his own.

Thanks again all for your input. I think I'll keep the A/C and lose the PS pump. I'll put in a manual steering box. AutoX and weekened road burner only so PS not that big O deal but it does get hot here in TX so the A/C will be used.

Where to find manual rack and pinion
If you're in no real hurry, watch eBay. I found mine for $78.01 + $14.00 shipping. it came complete with the mounts and tie rods and was in great shape.
