Looking for a shift knob

Hey guys, Ive been shopping around for shift knobs because my stock one was a lil tattered and my cheap apc shift knob i have now just isnt doing the job. Im looking to buy something thats direct fit for my s4 that has good weight and wont put a dent in the 'ole bank. What do yall use or reccomend.

i use a white teflon shift knob, It gets way too hot here in cali for me to use any sort of metal shift knob during the summer. i personally haven't had any problems using an extremely light shift knob, i also have my shifter cut down to almost nothing and i still don't notice a difference. it also only cost 20 bux. most people don't want a white shift knob though

edit : what looks like stains on my e-brake handle and door panel are some sort of malfunction in my camera.

My buddy Acesanugal has a weighted Miata knob on his FC, and the one I have's from a 86 Corolla GTS. Mine sits lower than his, but doesn't have much weight. And both of these are on the stock S4 lever. Hope it helps

Not to hijack the thread but just by cutting the shaft down wont change your shifter to a short stroke....its not the length of the shifter its where the pivot point is

there 2 different things remello. what i made is a "short shifter" by shortening the rod, your making the lever shorter which does make the throw shorter but requires alittle more effort because your taking away the torque you get with a longer rod. a "short throw shifter" has a longer rod length between the large balljoint and the small one that goes into the housing and also a spacer. so the amount of torque you have moving it doesn't change

both do pretty much the same job, one is a cost free mod, the other is 150-200$

mines smooth as butter and my throw can't be more than 1 1/2"

I have a similar Razo shift knob on my FD but with red stitching. I like it because its 8.x grams in weight. Is the camaro knob weighted?

drfting07 08-02-07 07:37 AM

Does that greddy knob fit the s4 threads or is it universal?

mine...it fits s5/fd shifters though

Maybe - but you need 5 times the force as anyone else, you have no shifter cover, and if you're not careful, your going to loose some skin. I can't imagine that being an upgrade.

pick up a s5 shift lever (probably get one cheap here on the forum), and you will have many more options...pretty much any mid-late 90s mazda. I was looking at the mazda3 knobs on ebay...they are simple, leather, and come in 2 or 3 different styles...or of course you can get an rx-8 knob with the rotor shape to it...i've heard these feel great and have a good weight...and of course any of them will thread onto the s5/FD threaded levers.

Mine is a RAZO. I believe that its made of aluminum. Its weight is very good and it works great. It came as polished aluminum and I powder coated it gloss black to match the interior. Sorry for the crappy phone pic.

stupidkid0304 08-02-07 09:15 AM

Yea I'm also loving my razo and would not ever think of replacing it.

FelixIsGod29X 08-02-07 09:18 AM

RX-8 knob FTW!

drfting07 08-02-07 10:50 AM

I like razo's too, but how do they install?

pavementking68 08-02-07 12:05 PM

i have a razo to in hyper black.they came with three inserts for differnt size shifter threads, and you just choose your thread size and screw it on.

RX729 08-02-07 12:39 PM

+1 for RAZO

DRFT211 08-02-07 01:28 PM

i had a razo, but that thing got so damn hot i got rid of it.. so i bought a rx8 knob and love it

micah 08-02-07 01:34 PM

I'd like to see an RX-8 knob installed in an FC. Pics anybody?

stupidkid0304 08-02-07 02:00 PM

I like the rx-8 knob too but where can I find one that has only 5 gears. I hear the euro rx-8s have 5 gears.

johnmasters 08-02-07 03:09 PM

It is true that the RAZO does get hot as hell when I put my top and windows up and the car sits out the 85-95 degree heat. However, when the top is down and the car sits in the direct heat, the shift knob does NOT get hot.

VacavilleFC 08-02-07 03:12 PM

WTF??

"5 times more force" ??? nope almost exactly the same as stock

"you have no shifter cover" ?? i'm in the process of making a custom leather cover

"and if you're not careful, your going to loose some skin".?? wtf are you talking about???

i've been using this setup for a couple months with absolutely no problems, i can shift quicker, it looks better, and nobody has lost any skin.

so please keep your rude coments to your self, if you don't like something thats fine but the last thing we need is another asshole telling people there wrong when you have no idea what your talking about,

TitaniumTT 08-02-07 03:43 PM

I do - because I tried it :D It sucked. That 5x force thing, maybe a slight exageration but it's not close to stock and nothing is almost exactely the same. That's like saying $1 is almost exactely the same as $100 becuase they are both money, and they both have the digid "1" Here on planet earth the laws of math and physics are unavoidable and if you shorten your lever then you need to add more force - it's physics and it's law. In order to shift your tranny it will require substantially more force than mine. PERIOD I learned a long time ago that a lazy man works twice as hard as a hard working man. Case & point - I did that free mod. It sucked. I put the stock shifter back on for a while. Then I bought a MT short shifter from a buddy. I changed shifters 3 times, when once would've been enough.
