I ran an 8" sub in a custom enclosure that did NOT obstruct the spare tire, for a while. Obviously, an amp as well. IT sounded okay, but not what I wanted. I wound up taking it out and running my speakers off the deck again (like normal) with stock headrest speaker controls, and ditching the sub and amp (40-50lb).

If anyone wants a well built custom 8" sub enclosure for a vert, Ill sell it cheap, with the sub (8" DCV audiobahn).

Kevein, I'd planned to do something similar. Why didn't you like it?

It really didnt add much more midbass or bass than the front stage had already, at road speed anyway. With the top up, it was okay, but I found myself asking "why the hell do I have an amp and sub and still the thing doesnt sound that great?". So I said screw it, and took it out. It was better than only mids/highs, but not much more so.

My 88 vert is in the shop for a change, but when I get it back I will take some pics.... but here's what I did...

Had stock radio removed that did not work, got a Panasonic AM/FM/1 indash CD/Sirrius ready detachable face with remote installed.

Replaced all speakers with new and bigger (including headrest speakers) but kept the same locations.

Amp went under spare tire cover crap behind driver's seat, all other original stuff disconnected except antennas.

Lemmee tell you, it is awesome. I was afraid that the smallish speakers would not be able to handle the volume, but they are great. Had the headrests wired as the rears, with L and R on each one.

I am very happy.
