Looking to buy
Hey guys, looking at buying a 1990 rx7 (dont know trim level)

Might also be a good idea to have a mechanic check it out.
You examine the same things as you would in the 1st gen. 2nd gens are fairly reliable (if in good shape), but less reliable than a 1st gen. You can really get a lemon if you're not careful. As for engine related stuff: knock protection is excellent, as is the oil cooler. Both are perhaps even overdone. But the cooling system isn't as forgiving and can lead to a lot of blown engines. Careful cooling system maintenance can greatly extend the engine's life. Next priority is oil (as in not letting it go empty). Other less important stuff: electrical accessories have failure prone solder joints, the pulsation dampener on the fuel injection system can leak and cause a fire, rear steer (DTSS) bushings can go bad and make the car unstable, oil cooler lines can leak slowly or suddenly burst (no oil => no engine).
