The biggest think to me is how does it run? It should boost well and run strong!
Is it stock? Sometimes these cars still have the orig cat & exhaust and that means most likely the cat will be getting really clogged by now...Its also common to see the Turbo inlet duct cracked if its orig. due to the extreme heat there, you can lose boost there as well.
Check the fluids, how does the oil look & smell? Check the coolant (before test drive) look for leaks, ask for service records...Drive it for a long time, not just around the corner, in all driving conditions. Then shut it off, recheck for fluid leaks, Check all electric items. Then restart and do more test driving...Sometimes a badley worn T2 (Or any car) will have a tough time restarting when its hot...Bring a buddy who is more into cars come to help you look her over...(4 eyes are better then 2)
Also check how it handles, check the tires, have the shocks ever been replaced? A/C work? pw sunroof? check everything!
Also read up on these cars to know as much as possible before your test drive!
Good luck/skill!
