Locked out of 3, 4, 5, and Reverse

Hey, so not actually my car, but when I was with my buddy (who isn't on here) in his FC, we were cruising around, and when we pulled in, the tranny refuses to go into any gear but 1 and 2, but it won't move, it will struggle then just die as if he just let his foot of the clutch while in gear without giving it any gas. but when it's in neutral and he lets the clutch out, it starts to roll backwards like it's in reverse (we're on a flat surface) any ideas?

My best guess would be a bad pilot bearing or the transmission is just toast.

My broke trany experience.

I was going to back out of the parking spot. Put it in reverse. I start working the clutch n gas to get oving but the car rolled foward.. OH i missed reverse I must have it in forth. Happens quite often. I thougt nothing of it. Retried reverse. I shift first then reverse cause im used to doing this with garbage trannies. This time I KNOW FOR SURE the shifter was in reverse. BUt the car tried to roll foward again. HAd to push the car out of the parking spot.

The shift linkage broke and my trans was permanetly stuck in 4th or 5th gear. I think it was forth because I drove the car home like that. MAN was it hard riding the clutch to get the car mving.

I had that same thing happen to me in a ford contour I had a few years ago. Ya, it wasn't fun driving like that for 20miles (mostly city driving)

sounds like the tranmission is stuck in reverse...the older n/a transmissions can do that ****. Putting it in 1 or 2 would mean its trying to go back and forth at the same time(like a atx transbrake but with no torque converter to spin), and it with the clutch disengaged(or disengaging) it will try to stop the engine as well.

The tail housing comes off really easily, and the position of the rods will answer your question right away. If you're lucky, you'll be able to just pop it into neutral and put everything back together. My current transmission was shipped to me stuck in 2nd gear and Reverse, which meant the shifter wouldn't go anywhere at all. I popped the rods up and all was well again.

On the other hand, I've heard horror stories where the shift forks break the hub for the gear inside the gearbox and the tranny gets stuck in gear. Happened on a friends car. Tried to put it in reverse, went forward because it was stuck in 2nd gear.

taken off in 5th, not THAT hard, but the tranny doesn't like it.

Well he has 2 spare trannies sitting around, but he just decided to buy a t2 tranny instead, so we're gonna tear his current one apart and see what happened.

Ok to original poster, I am going to PM you on how to fix this. I had this exact problem. EXACT problem. I found some threads and get the exact info.

Your car is stuck in reverse cuz the shifter fork is hung up. Happened to me at an intersection.

I could get it into first or second and if I left it in Neutral and let of the clutch it would go back wards.

There is an easy fix without removing ur tranny or tailshaft.

Miatas had the same trouble at times.

All you have to do is loosen the tranny crossmember from the chassis. This will let it sag enough to get to the reverse light sensor out. Kind of a Pita but not too bad. Once you are done with this I attached an allan wrench to a open hex multi tool hanlde you can put all the bits in. I stuck it in the hole and popped it forward and back until I heard a pop and it was loose. Got back in the car and shifter was perfect. I was so frickin happy.
