loan for 88 turboII

ok i've had my heart set on getting a 7 for some time now and in my area their are currently 3 from which i can choose from. my dilema is wether i should get a loan and not take the risk that when i have the cash in my hand their will be no t2 near.. i'm 18 finishing high school... have no real expenses except for my cell phone and insurance i pay right now on a 99 v6 accord (hate it, will never own one again) selling the accord is out of the question because i plan on giving it back to my mother since she right now has no car. i've found 3 which are what appears to be in good condition.

a white 88 w/ rebuilt motor, looks in perfect (cosmetic) condition owner asking for $4,000

89 red (junk-spec motor) 17" claims to have "minor" cosmetic problems.. haven't seen in person yet asking for $3,300

another 89 red 17" most likely rebuilt motor looks MINT, but owner is asking for $5,800 OUCH!

i know very little about mechanics, i can do routine things like change oil, plugs, etc.. my father on the other hand went to school to be a mechanic but doesn't know too much about rotaries which is why he is a little iffy about me getting the car.. well, any suggestions? don't tell me i'm too young for an rx7 =) flame. this is what i want, my daddy isn't paying for it. i'm willing to make the sacrifice... just want some input on people that actually own them. thanks.

Were you 18 when you got the Accord?? Are you on the loan?? The reason I asked this is because it may be very hard to find a bank to loan you money on an car that old.

Ok, Here's what you should do, Go to the guy with the junk - spec. Take a look at the car. Look at the mileage, body shape and interior. Also drive it, see how it shifts, see if the synchro's are any good. Point here is, the engine get's rebuilt, Period. If you don't know the history of the car, you should just automatically assume it needs to be rebuild.

This site has a how-to guide on buying an rx7. Pretty helpful.

Personally, I would never take out a loan to buy a 13+ year old car. Too many things to go wrong.

Better to save up and then just pay and have it done with.

TII's aren't that rare or hard to find, that waiting isn't an option, although S5's don't come around that often.

I financed mine with a Personal line of credit at my bank, since nobody does used car loans and I'm not with a credit union.

That's about the best interest rate I could find. Don't buy one on a credit card. RX-7s will last forever if you know how to work on them & keep them up - or know a good rotary mechanic (check with your regional/state rx-7 club for recommendations).

I say keep looking. I almost got an 88 TII in Miami for like $1700. Only reason I didn't was it was kinda far, but moreso it was red(not my color).
