A little trouble...

How can I tell through the exhaust if my engine is running too rich and if it is how can I adjust the fuel/air mixture?

This has really been bothering me because my car blows blue smoke at start up and that is the only time. It also idles rough for about 3 to 5 seconds and then idles real smooth.

Thanks!

When it comes to exhaust smoke, blue is oil, white is coolant, and black is fuel. It might be the start of your oil rings going.

OIL RINGS??

If it was really my oil rings wouldn't the car burn oil throughout the entire RPM range? It doesn't do that! It just blows a puff of blue smoke after a cold start and the car idles rough for a few seconds (3-5).

Really oil rings huh?

He probably means the oil control rings and the are located on the side of each rotor. As for a little smoke on start up I wouldn't worry about it.It is common for rotaries to smoke on start up after they have a few miles on them.

Dak, you beat me to it. Yes, I meant the oil control rings on the sides of the rotors. That's what forced me to rebuild after 168k miles.

Thanks

OK great!

I knew what oil rings were being discussed after the first post.
I am a little relieved to feel that the smoke at start up is normal. I have about 96K miles on my car.

Thanks a lot.
