a little tech help please

ok im sure everyone knows the answer but here goes ...what is the metal thing connected to my airbox and how do i get rid of it (88 n/a gtu).. it has a plug on it and when i took it out to see how it would run it ran like crap. im planning to make a cold iar box or whatever you would call it and i want to clean up my engine bay .. i also wanted to know how much of a difference does it make when you take the power steering pump off . i basically want to know ir the pro's outway the loss of power steering . i also want to lose the air pump but i dont know what i have to do with the hoses going to it .. and if anyone can explain where the egr is hat would help also..as you can probably see i am new to the whole rotary thing but im very interested in learning as much as i can.

Metal thing - Its the AFM. It measures the air going into the engine. You can get rid of it by going to a standalone (haltech, microtech, sds etc).

Removing PS - I dont find it hard to steer with out it. Some bitch and moan how hard it is. What I suggest doing is taking the lines off the rack and turning the wheel a few times. That will give you a good idea of how it feels.

Air pump - Just follow the lines. 1 goes to a silencer under the pass head light. I took 10 minutes and ripped this out with the air pump. It weighs next to nothing but I dont like half assing jobs. The other runs to the air box, I used a big rubber plug and put it over the nipple on the box. The third line runs to the ACV. ACV is useless w/o air pump, so you take that off. Then your split air becomes useless, take that off. Then your cat will fry supposibly, remove that.

EGR - Dumps exhaust gases into the intake or some crap.

Grab a Haynes manual, man. It's a good read, and handy.

Don't be offended, but I'm going to be blunt. You don't have enough knowledge about cars to start ripping stuff off them at will. If something like the airflow meter (the metal thing) doesn't look to you like "something that is probably quite important" then you need to do some research on how EFI works and the particulars of this type of car.
For starters get a Haynes manual (it's good good photos), and go to either www.fc3s.org or www.iluvmyrx7.com and download the relevant chapters of the Factory Service Manual (this is your RX-7 bible) and read as much as you can. Sites like www.howstuffworks.com are also great for improving your general automotive knowledge.
Don't be afraid to ask questions here, but go easy on the modifying 'til you're sure about what you're doing. It'll save you from making an expensive mistake.

BTW, the cold air box is a good idea. Do that.

thats why i asked before hand .. i have a good knowledge of how things workon a car , thats what i do..and yes it did look important thats why i ask ..so basically i need a stand alone in order to take the stock air box out . anyone know how much $ thats gonna be? and about the power steering , i have driven many cars without and i dont like it but i figured the difference wouldnt be as big as the difference on my 79 cutlas.. and for my defence im not a redneck with a hacksaw just ripping stuff off my car .. i have had lots of different cars and do all the work myself ,changing head gaskets ,engine swaps. pretty much everything that can be done aside from rebuilding the bottom half . but i have only had this car for about 3 months and it all looks so different as you all know .so thanks for all the help and ill check those links out ..all the help is definatly appreciated

also when i got the car i was told that it was a lost cause (shitty plugs and *** backwards firing order)and it also poured oil out of the front of the engine (it was the seal behind the front cover ).. so i grab the hanes and 8 hours or so later it was running and has ran great ever sice.. and since then i have been trying to learn as much about it as possible . dont know why but i felt the need for some background info.
