Disconnecting the battery with the key on will not hurt the ECU.
The ECU is only damaged from the battery being connected backwards, or from improper testing (such as the use of a "Test light") on the inputs and outputs of the ECU.

Hey hombre.
Hey man. No turning the car off with the key on doesn't hurt the ECU. The only ways you can hurt the ECU are by connecting the battery backwards, which can also blow up the battery. That will also fry all the grounds. I doubt using a test light will hurt anything, but its possible.

Most of the ECU's sensors and actuators are 5 volt... what do you thing will happen when using a test light hooked up to a 12 volt source or completing a 5 volt circuit?
I have seen ECU's burned up because someone used a test light on the BAC Valve. I have seen ECU's wasted because someone hooked a test light up and probed the ACV with the key on.
