little question

my friend michael has had an rx7 that he got from his dad for a while now and it has been driven hard for a long time (his dad got it new in 1988) and there mechanic said the engine was going to go in a little while. He wanted me to find out if he could put a different mazda engine into it such as a mx3, mx6, or protege. thanks.

Anything can be done if you have the money, but why?

I agree... why would you want to put in a mazda 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0... none of them have the smoothness, HP, or even torque that the rotary does and it would be considerable work to put one of those other motors in.

And why does the mechanic say the rotary in your friend's dad's car is gonna go soon??? is it simply because he doesn't know about rotaries (which is probably the case) or is there a real problem, such as low compression or flooding??? Its been my experience that most NA rotaries last at least 150K miles if taken care of, and driven very hard and there are people on this board with un-opened 13Bs with 200K+ miles on them.
