a little help please!!
ok guys....I am trying to get my 86 GXL back up and running. Here's the deal. I was driving it and everything was cool, but then it just cut out on me. It turns over but it won't start. I am putting in a new ignition switch today because someone broke mine trying to jack the car, and then I can do a compression test. It is bone stock with only 87K miles on it. I have done the searches in here, but it seems like everyone else who has the flooding problem has it when they try to start it up, and not when it is already running. It was running fine, and then it just sputtered and stalled out. I know it was flooded badly, because I have tried the unflooding tricks. Problem is that I am not sure where to look because this is different from what everyone else has had. I plan on doing the comp check once I get the new switch done. Once that is done, where should I look? As long as the #'s are good, then at least I can look at other things, like leaking injectors, etc. The only other things I can say are that the plugs and wires were old, and that when I first tried to unflood it, there was so much fuel in the engine that it had NO compression due to being too lubricated. Once we got the fuel out it had comp again, but my tester was broken, so not sure how much. My coils have been replaced, as has the afm, but I dont know if either of these did the trick because of the *** who tried to steal the car! PLEASE let me know where else I should be looking if I am on the wrong track!

As far as the thought of no comp, I say that because the first time I tried a comp test, the starter was just whining steady like it wasnt even hooked up to anything--just a steady solid whine, not the sound you get when the seals come around. Once we did the unflood, it sounded normal. That was the only thing I could think of.
I am unable to get any codes out, because it is an 86. The 86-88 ECU didnt store any codes, so the only way I would be able to get a code is while it is running, which wont help since I cant start it. Not only that but it has a new battery and new cables as well, so even if it did store any, they would be gone now. There are no other electrical issues that I have found yet. As far as I can recall, after I unflooded it, we could smell fuel when we tried to start it. It is low on gas, but I discounted that because we did smell fuel getting to the engine and the plugs were wet, so it isnt out of gas. The crank angle sensor is not loose. As far as I recall, there was spark. I didnt try to push start it, so that might be an option once I get the switch and new plugs in. I appreciate the replies so far--keep the ideas coming!!
