Lightly modded TII, Where to set my SAFC??

1987 tII

Racingbeat Turbo Back exhaust
Walbro Fuel Pump rewired
Racingbeat FCD
Boost and A/F guage
stock otherwise.

My car is going to continue to run the air pump and any oter emission control so I can keep the smell down as much as possible. Its actually pretty clean right now.

So I need an idea of where to set the SAFC to for efficient power. My car seems to like to hang around 9psi of max boost according to my autometer guage, so Im guesing about 10psi. I also may go to an open atmosphere bov if that makes a difference.

I will probably get my car dyno tuned but I figure someone may have an idea of where my car should be set up on this safc.

Thanks guys!

I would go through the range and set it kind of rich, then tune it down as the A/F ratio seems to dictate. I think a dyno might be the best way to tune it properly.

can the safc moniter a/f ratio? its so hard watching all these guages at once. it would be nice to do some 30 second loggings or whatever.

Th answer is sort of.

You can use the blue wire on the SAFC and tap it into the O2 sensor signal wire on the ECU. This will give you a reading of the voltage the O2 is putting out. This voltage can tell you how rich the mixture is. In order to monitor the voltage you have to do it in the sensor check menu of the SAFC, in this menu there is no datalogging or peak hold function.

ok. I actually did not get my safc in the mail yet so Im not exactly sure what you are talking about, but Im sure I will figure it out. What is the blue wire supposed to be wired into?

The blue wire is there for use with other car applications, not sure which ones however. Our cars do not use it in the normal operation so most people use it to monitor O2 voltage.

hmm. good information. are there any other "trick" wireups for the safc?

I dont need anything crazy, how about boost?? electronic boost. maybe I can run a new wire from the boost sensor to the safc? or does it not have a boost sensor. man, I just cannot find any good info on this safc. I guess I'll have to wait until I get it in a few days.

You have two choices. You can wire the SAFC up so that it adjusts fuel on the basis of throttle position, or on the basis of boost. The SAFC reads everything in voltage, so you can if you want wire it to the boost sensor wire BEFORE the FCD and adjust the fuel delivery that way. It's a little bit more tricky but might work well. The fuel delivery then becomes boost dependant which is nice.

nice. that sounds like a spectacular decision for incorporating this blue product into my vehicle.

You have been much helpfull!!

So I should maybe richen things like 5% on the mid and like 10% on the top end? then turn it down?? anybody have more distinct numbers?

saabguy - how is that set up running on your car. It is almost exactly what I plan on running soon. Have you encountered any boost creep or spiking with the small 87 wastegate? And for others would you guys reccomend me getting 720 secondaries and a safc with tuning now or are the stock injectors fine?

Ya the SAFC is a usefull tool. It's hard to give specific #'s because every car is different. At lower rpms the car does not need alot if fuel, start raising it up till 3800 where the secondaries kick in, then you can lower it for a bit then begin to raising it again.

The setup is running great! I've put about 1000 miles on the car since all the upgrades and I have been very conservative because of the lack of fuel and the high miles. All in all its the fastest car I have ever owned and I cant wait until I get my safc tuned so Im a bit safer. I havent seen any boost spiking, havent seen anything above about 9psi on the guage but then again I havent run it on the highway to the end of fourth gear because I really dont wanna pop the motor right now.

*edit* I ported my wastegate to the maximum size that the stock flp will go.
