umm i would say the 86 87 se woudl be the lightest.
but if you rlooking for the best equiped but lightest model it
would be the 87 sport or 88 gtu. then to the 88 turbo.
but those are my thoughts. Lates Matt

89-90 GTUs? Didn't Icemark just say that the GTUs wasn't the lightest of the S5's? I'm confused and someone here is full of crap. I'm not sure who though. If I were a betting man, though, I'd go with mr. 17,000 posts. JMHO.....
oh...... I reread your second post, Matt, and I think you might have been saying that your choice for power to weight for the s5 is the GTUs. Sorry about the previous comment but the way you said it made it very confusing.

The 89-90 GTUs had the LSD, bigger half shafts, bigger wheels and tires, and the bigger brakes that added the extra weight. The alum hood that saved 20lbs on the GTUs didn't really make up for that extra weight when comparied to the strippy base model 89-90 GTU.
88 S4 Base Model is the absolute lightest of them all, and this is knowledge based on what we know of the different models and their features, plus my weighing of all of the 7 FCs i've had over the years (86 GXL x2, 87 GX, 89 GXL, 86 Base, 88 Base, 91 TII). I have all the weights on a chart somewhere, I'll try to dig it up and post it. The 88 Base was something like 70 lbs. lighter than the 86 Base and both were bone stock and had a full tank of gas at the time. I'm going to attribute a good deal of the weight difference to the different wheels and hood though. The 88 Base had an aluminum hood, whereas the 86 had a steel hood. I don't think the chassis are much different.
