Leaky thermostat, a bit confused?

Well, I picked up this 89 TII a while back, and it seemed to have a very slight coolant leak where the black plastic coolant pipe mates to the metal thermostat housing. The previous owner had used some kind of liquid gasket to seal the connection, but it wasn't doing the trick. Thinking maybe that was a shortcut, I figured I'd buy a new gasket for it, and seal it properly...or so I thought. After looking around for the gasket, it seems no one has it? Its as though it does not exist, but that just doesn't seem right, should there be a gasket there? I've run it with no gasket, and still get a very slight leak, about the same as when it had the liquid gasket applied. Any help would be much appreciated, this is one of those little instances where never having owned a 7 is a disadvantage.

BTW, the thermostat, and rubber o-ring gasket are fine, brand new.

yes, there is defiantly a gasket there. Advanced Auto has them in my neck of the woods.. and my neck is deep in the woods. If not, you can always go to the dealer.

After dusting off a few unused memory cells, I think that you might only be able to get the gaskets at a store with the purchase of a new thermostat. Most people on the forum recommend against the use of aftermarket thermostats, so if you buy one, only use the gasket.

hmm, now that sounds like the old answers I was getting. I bought an OEM thermostat, but it only came with the rubber o-ring gasket. What I need is something that goes between the plastic pipe and metal housing.

The last one I got definatly had a proper, cardboard/cork/rubber/whatever theh ell material it was gasket with it. But, you can always make your own! At your auto parts store, grab a roll of gasket material (Its some form of rubber/plastic mat stuffs), and trace and cut. That will work as well
