Leaded race gas and its effects?

What i am wondering is if i were to run high octane race gas in my car all the time with there be any long term damage because of deposites from the lead in the gas?

if you have an O2 sensor or cat, yes. its way too vague of a question. you may wanna fill in a few variables.
ie; car, mods

this is more or less a theoretical question since my car doesnt even run right now. But my car isnt going to see much road time when i get done with it. And with the way gas prices are goin i was concidering just buying race gas by the drum and just filling up at where ever i keep it.

I am not to worried about extrenal parts except maybe o2 sensors. Im more concerned with damage to rotor housing and seals because of deposites from the lead in the gas and can it cause harm from running it all the time?

more than likely. but then again they did have rotary motors when leaded was all you could get! dunno, may have to use a special apex seal.

And just incase you want to know any way the car is an 87 turbo 2
apexi intake
corck sport 3" downpipe
no converters
3" exhaust with magnaflow muffler
ngk plug wires
HKS Bov
act 6puck clutch
All these mods were done by the previous owner. I just picked up the car on saturday.

Its got no compresion on the rear rotor so it needs a rebuild.

I am not planning to run the race gas as it sits now but more doing research for the future of where i would like to go with the project.

ah, and fuel injectors, they might not take to well to leaded fuel either. it depends, but with leaded gas, youre better off using a carb rather than fuel enjection.

you can buy non leaded race gas up to 100 or 104 oct or something...

there is no way it'll be cheaper then pump gas though...

i know its not going to cost less than pump gas. Basicly my thinking is with the way the prices are going if im going to spend alot in gas i might as well just buy the good stuff. And buy it in bulk.

P.S. - sorry for the double post higher up

shortens cat life and will hurt o2 sensor.

If you order in massive bulk (iirc at least 500 gallons) you can get 104 octane for ~2.60 a gallon. However im pretty sure there has got to be some kind of law against keeping 500 gallons of race gas in your garage

You shouldnt have any problems except maybe the fuel injectors, but i doubt it. If anything, the lead will help the motor its a good lubricant, which is why vavle guides had to change when they went to unleaded. Leaded gas does render cats useless and unrepairable within minutes, it bonds to the platinum/paladium coating so instead of the catalysts being exposed the the gas, its just the PB. Not sure what it does to 02 sensors.

Leaded fuel will kill your cats as well as your un-heated O2 sensor. If you're using it just for drag race, use heated O2 sensors and drop the cats if you don't have emissions. I'm not sure how long the cats will last when leaded fuel is used for short periods though. You can get up to 104 Octane unleaded gas if you find it then from 110, 112, 114 etc will be leaded gas.
We have a local gas station that sells 104 unleaded for about $6.00/gallon the last time I checked . It's not something you would run regularly though unless you have money to burn and unnecassary.
Some time back I bought 114 leaded gas (heated O2 sensor and no cats) for $6.50/gallon for track only. I don't even want to know what it is now.

the stock O2 sensor wire is only a two wire, which is unheated. IF you upgraded to an E6K, or Microtech you could possibly run an optional heated O2 sensor. Thus negating the worries for lead in Gas. As for cats go, you're screwed there. can't use both.

OH and some leaded gas has a dual octane rating. 110/130 which means you have 110 at stoich or lean, and 130 at full rich. You could purchase this stuff at local airports also.
