Leaded gas?

All them old engines used to use leaded gas and run some super-high compression ratios. To my knowledge they stopped doing that because lead would kill the catalytic converters. Now, my question is this.. since some cars (like, oh race cars for instance  ) don't have catalytic converters, would there be a problem using leaded gas?

The benefits of leaded gas is increased lubrication for apex seals (lead can act as a lubricant), and higher octane fuel for less $$.

Any ideas?

as long as your engine is high compression, it might work. i know if i use anything higher than 87 octane, my car slows down. seeing as how lead raises compression, lead might = bad.

FYI a lot of race gases are leaded. I think in a NA anything other than 87 (and maybe 85) is just wasting your money.

lead reduces knock, it doesn't raise compression, it's a lubricant, it fouls cats, it destroys the atmosphere.

In NA RX-7's you want to run (within reason) the lowest octane you can find. That's what all the SCCA ITA IT7 and ITS racers do (all NA motors).

But there were only a couple million cars out there back then.

Now there is almost a billion cars operating legally just in the USA.

Lead in the atmosphere is a very bad thing... kills trees, causes B-defects and sterillity in animals (including humans). Lead is very very Bad bad bad.

Its ok as long as you dont have an O2 sensor......
Dont forget about that... You could probably get a way with it for a while, but it will kill the O2 sensor in the end.

If I cared about the environment then I wouldn't have bought an RX-7
