Stock replacement - not really a performance upgrade.

It is HUGE improvement over the stock stuff... i have GR2's and they are WAY stiffer and better feeling than the stock stuff... IMO its a MAJOR upgrade... and i'm still running on stock springs... Go for it man

untrue IMO...GR2's struts and Gasadjust shocks are a nice upgrade from stock and in my opinion the best choice for street driven cars. they will handle a significantly stiffer spring without trouble and they are made well (hey, KYB makes a ton of OEM stuff including HKS's coilovers). They are a significant step up from stock but aren't as harsh as koni non adjustables (I even ditched the konis, rode like CRAP). I've had the GC coilover conversion on KYB's for a years now and my FC is a great handler (still a tad stiff, but hey the springs in the GC kit are no joke) and it doesn't ride like a chopped honda bouncing around all over the place. They make great replacements but are also a good upgrade for street cars if you plan to install a set of springs. I even put a set in my GVR4

Do you really think it was a great improvement over stock stuff or they just felt alot better than 15 year old suspension? Could be a little of both I think. Also I think that running new struts with stock/old springs could hurt your new struts.

in reading ted's site he lists tokico's as replacements as well and I guess since they aren't adjustable and bolt in they can be considered as such, just like the KYB's. but, both sets are significantly more aggressively valved than the OEM pieces. for best performance to suit how you drive adjustable is much better though, in which case I'd opt for GC + AGX, Cusco, Tein etc...

I agree with Ted, the KYB GR-2 is just about the same shock as what comes stock on the 86-87 Sports, 87-88 Turbo and 88 GTU.

And compared to any shock even 10 years old a new shock will feel like a night and day difference. Hell I could easily feel a difference between a KYB with 20K miles and KYB with 60K miles.

Putting the KYB on, just brings the car back to like new shocks.

they last a reasonably long time though - I wouldn't expect OEM mazda pieces to withstand 50K with springs as stiff as those from the standard GC conversion. like I said, they aren't as aggressive as others, but they are more aggressive than stock.
