Cool Kickin A$$ and shootin' FLAMES

HEHEH.
Tonight i went out for a bit after installin my new pump and coming back today from a custom cat replacement straight pipe (piper motorsports). The pipe is VERY VERY good quality. For anyone who doesnt know piper motorsports, they 'kinda' work with Rotary Performance in Manassas VA.

Well..lets get down to it...
My bro was drivin behind me, and said i shot a flame (huge backfire) and i was like WTF? so i took it hard and floored the bitch on the highway next to a barrier and after about 4-5 seconds of being 6500+ in 3rd gear i clutched it and *BAAAM* i hear a HUGEEE backfire and i SEE FLAMES IN MY REAR VIEW MIRROR AND I see the WHOLE barrier up to my drivers door light up red.

Boy I am SOO excited right now. Not only do i have a nice bit of torque and hp increase, but im shooting beautiful 5ft ***** of flame out my ***

Ya, flames are cool, but I don't know why everyone get so exited about them.... I've seen peaople consider that before buying an exhaust!! Like "Dude, will my car shoot flames??" Damn, aren't you interested in sound and horsepower??

I backfire once in a while, but I don't know if there are any flames to speak of.... at night you might see a flash....

You runnin kindof rich of with that new pump or something?

yeah, im def. running REAL rich. I backfire whenever i blip the throttle. I would love to cure this, as they are VERY loud. I was actually getting the pipe for performance for the MIR event this weekend to get the best 1/4 mile time i could, and my main cat was busted so bad it was making a 'tit tit tit tit tit tit' sound from it ;(.
The car sounds BADASS now below 4k rpm on agressive throttle.

Anyway to lean it out some without going out spending 250 on an S-AFC or other piggy back fuel controller?
(preparring as much as i can this weekend...first time running at a strip EVER)

Jeff

edit:
per warning of RETed, i decided to go with a 2.5" MP instead of 3". Once i do my turbo swap, i MAY be selling it to get a 3" made. It all depends on what you guys say. would a 3"DP -> 2.5" MP -> 3" catback work, or 2.5 DP, 2.5 MP....or 3" all the way?

hmm..

I backfire quite a bit, but have never seen any flames, not that I could. I have a N1 and bonez racing downpipe. Am I shooting flames and not even knowing about it? Do flames come out every time a car backfires?

not every time, but rotaries seem to like to shoot flames when they backfire.
The general method I've heard is get the RPMs high, let off a little then tap the throttle again

If you go with a 3" DP and MP, you will need appropriate fuel system upgrades as well.
You will need an FCD, since you could be hitting well over 10psi, and probably an upgraded fuel pump (at LEAST a rewire) and either 720cc secondaries, and/or and S-AFC to replace the leaning out the FCD will be causing.
Get ready for a real beast on your hands with that size pipe though- it's an amazing difference....

I'm starting to worry that flames = rice...

I mean, if you make more power, killer, If it sounds good, excellent. If it shoots flames, eh, no big deal.

whoa whoa! i understand someone calling LED windsheild wipers and euroclears rice...... but flames coming outta the exhuast thats natural for a rotary, just cuz someone thinks its cool doesnt make it rice.... thats like saying " lightweight rims are rice cuz everyone likes them" some people think thats its pretty cool that the exhuast shoots flames ... i do, does that make me a ricer... i hope not...

My point is, people modifying their cars for the express purpose of making flames, is rice....

i have to agree with peejay. in an aspect it COULD be ricey, but then again, getting a huge exhaust system solely for the purpose of looking cool is also rice. Rice (to me) is when you do something for the wrong reason. The reason i knew i was going to shoot flames was because my brother is running straight pipe to an N1 muffler, but i never really saw him do anything.
Thanks bambam, im probably going to stay w/ 2.5" till i can afford all those mods.

The reason im so excited is just like the reason you get excited the first time you put on your first cat-back, or upgrade your turbo. Its just YOU are finally doing it. not watching other people do it. i mean, we're all modding our cars so that WE can feel the power of OUR beasts right?

what about getting a performance exhaust, and it just happends to shoot flames and yo *** be like "SWEET LAWDY! THATS SOME BBADDD SHEIITT FFOOO'!!! ", that make me rice?, hehe.. bc thats pretty much what happened. Oh yeah, and back to leaning out your mixture with out a piggy back, any one have an suggestions? i mean i shoot flame and burn peoples eyes with richness when im cruising down the road and let off the gas.. its THAT bad, i dont have to do any throttle tricks just.. drive, and its KILLING my MPG. Thanks again fellahs.

don't you think the 720cc secondaries would be overkill? With fcd and a walbro on full exhuast most guys actually have to lean it out at top when they get safc's. I would think that a ported wg to prevent boost creep, and a 255 lph walrbo should be plenty even with the fcd, provided you have an egt or a/f to see if you are running rich or stoich or lean

My bumper has black spots over each muffler tip...they're not that bad, though.

i got a question, im putting this new exhaust on next week, (bonez high flo cat, cork sport cat back), so should i advance my timing at all to run it a little rich, or is it not going to make any difference?

Not when you got a turbo n/a with 720 secondaries like me. The other day I heard it go a little lean. I was lucky not to have broken an apex seal. I installed an msd fuel pump today, problem solved.
