Ted,

Never post a picture like that again, that's Beautiful!

Where from? How much?

Also, will that caliper/rotor setup fit inside a 15" "vert" rim?

pretty much impossible to have a 13" rotor and a caliper in a 15" wheel. my guess is you need at least 17's and most 17's won't fit.

Stock brakes are more than adequate unless you're into endurance racing or car shows.

actually, most 17's will clear those 13 inch brakes...before buying though make a cardboard template and check...K2RD should be able to get you an outline to make a template from.

cymfc3s has them on his FC. They're really awesome. You might want to talk to him if you have any more questions.

Can you take advantage of such a large brake without massive wheels/tires?

What size wheel are you running, any clearance issues?

Impressions of these vs. stock 4-piston brakes?

For even pad wear.

Yes, the smaller ones toward the leading edge of the pad prevent the pad from digging into the rotor.

You can even fit 14" rotors and 6pot calipers with some 17's.

I also run a big brake kit sponsored by Rotora. It is 13.2 inch two piece rotors with a 4 piston caliper. 17inch rims are a minimium in order to clear the brakes properly.
Heres a picture of it, those are 17 inch Volk Gram Lights.

What do you big brake owners do about the spare tire? No way that it would fit over those...

Well, if it were me, I'd carry about an extra jack stand, just in case your need to swap the back to the front.

so you guys that have the big brakes on your FC.....

How do they work? There are Stoptech 13" 4 pot brakes for FD's for $1800 now. I got a ride in a K2RD.com prepped T2 with 13" AP fronts and it stopped brutally fast from 50mph to zero. My seatbelts saved me from eating the dash.

At what point do the stock 4 piston 5 lug T2/GXL style brakes with upgraded pads become inefficient?

I had my wimpy 140hp stock engine with no mod FC and full suspension upgrade with stock brakes and HAWK HP+ pads on Sears Point and Thunderhill here in NorCal and they worked flawlessly.

I'm sure with a 350rwhp+ FC it would be a different story.

But at what point are the stock brakes inadequate?
Guess we'll see when IN2TWins road races his 400rwhp widebody FC with stock brakes and upgraded pads....

I'm really curious myself.

Look at that bridge, a single Allen bolt... Willwoods Fleeeeeeex.

Are people really getting a lot of fade from the Factory 4 pistons? Or are we talking mostly bling-factor?

Wow, didn't think this would generate this much response...

If we're talking about the K2RD Wilwood 6-piston 13" big brake kit, then the pic should be accurate.  The kit uses the Wilwood Superlite-6 caliper.

The brake caliper uses staggered piston sizes for better pad wear, as others have mentioned.

The kit does clear stock FD 16" rims.  They do NOT clear most aftermarket 16" rims (if the 16's are "high disc", they might clear), but they should clear almost all aftermarket 17" rims.  They do NOT clear stock FC 16" rims, nor will they clear any 15" rims (i.e. convertible stock).

I don't know pricing on those big brake kits, as there was very little interest for them when I was associated with K2RD a few years ago.  If K2RD still is offering them, they should be under $2,000 for the 6-piston set-up.

I have the "Stage I" K2RD Wilwood Dynalite set which uses a 12.19" x 1.25" rotor up front with the stock brake master cylinder.  With the Wilwood Polymatrix "D" brake pad (least aggressive), I still want more aggressive bite.  I'll be changing to PFC 93's or 83's soon and report back; you can't get these pads for stock calipers anymore, since Performance Friction discontinued them. One good side about running these calipers is that brake pads are CHEAP - $70 for PFC 93's, if they were stock FC and PF still made them, it would've cost me closer to $200!

Brakes don't stop the car from moving forward, your tires do. Your brakes are there to slow the wheels down. In 99% of cases, you run out of tire traction before you run out of friction and clamping force in the brakes. You should be able to lock up the front tires (or engage ABS) with you stock 4 pistons.

What do good big brake kits offer in stopping distance improvement over the stock setup? It might be as little as their ability to be modulated. If it's easier to keep the tires at the very threshold of traction, you'll stop faster.

Honestly, the threshold is higher than most people realize (if their pads, lines and fluid are appropriate). You know when you're overworking your brakes on the track when they start to get hot, as you’re braking for tighter turns (or after fast straights), you'll feel the brakes get lazy (or fade). This is a sign that you're brakes are seeing too much heat and stress, and either your pads material is coming ineffective, or your fluid is starting to boil.

This is where the big brakes come in, much more rotor mass, larger surfaces and bigger hear dissipation designs. They also get stronger bridges/calipers to hold up against the stresses of repeated heavy stops and turns. They offer consistency at higher stress levels.

BTW, I absolutely love Stoptechs. They’re a great design and implementation. Modulation is awesome, very nice.

Come on, we both know you don't need those. Bling yerns for you to go fast first. (In case anyone is wondering Bling is his car's actual name )

Everyone please re-read MtnRacer and gnx7's comments! There are exactly 2-5 people in the FC forum who might need the stuff in this thread. That is not an exageration.
