what is your favorite? i'm trying to decide which to get, and i would like to get your opinions on it. do they allow about the same amount of air flow? i want to have better airflow, but i want cool air too. what kind of intake are y'all using?

The most restrictive part of the intake is usually the stock airbox. I mean look at, doesn't exactly promote as much airflow as an open cone, don't you think?

I'd go with a cone style filter. Much less restrictive. Won't provide a lot of power by itself (I think Blake proved it added 1 hp), but in combination with an exhaust will help more. The problem with just adding a cone is, you might start to draw in hot engine bay air, as opposed to cooler outside air. The ultimate solution, build a cold air box. You can also buy them, Mariah Motorsports makes a good one that comes with the cone filter. This will partition the air filter from the rest of the engine bay and let the snorkel provide cool outside air.

Looks alright, but, all of the pictures are the same except the first one, so how do you know what your getting?

Has anybody purchased the '1069E' and what is it like?
Also, what does the column 'F/D' stand for?

I've got no clue what the F/D column stands for. I know vaughnc has bought the Mariah Cold Air Box. I think he said he only paid around $150 for it. He described the fit and finish as good and said it was pretty sturdy.

One argument against the cone filter set up is that it is noiser. The stock box muffles the suction noise of the air being drawn in, whereas the cone doesn't. That noise filters into the passenger compartment. So, if additional noise isn't a problem, go with the cone. If quieter is better, go with the K&N drop in. As pointed out, cone set up has a very small edge over stock box in performance. I went for the K&N drop in. Don't wanna mess with my tunes.

Does anyone make a ram-air intake for 2nd gens? Or did anyone do it themselves, home-depot intake If so, any pics and instructions?

The possibilities are endless:

1) Keep stock airbox and simply drill some holes underneath and put tubes coming in from the front of the car
2) Keep stock airbox and remove top cover. Buy a hood scoop and place EXACTLY above the airbox. Make a DIY rubber airtight connector between the hood scoop and the -now open- airbox.
*THIS MUST PROVIDE THE BEST INTAKE*
3) Just buy a cone and be done with it
4) Install the cone and buy an aftermarket cold-air induction system
5) Install the cone and make a cold-air box yourself (there are a couple of how-tos floating around)
6) Remove EVERYTHING, and just place a big ol' hose from the front of the bumper, right up to the intake That should provide maximum HP, but will be VERY tricky and dangerous...

I'm sure there are other methods too, but nothing comes to mind now...

I still like to use the stock airbox with the top part cut open. It seems to give me more power than the 2.5x4 cone that I had, maybe is becuase that is too small. Also with a cone, it sucks in a lot of dirt

hey, thanks for all of the help! I guess i'll be going with the cone K&N. Pd_Day, how did you make that heat shield for your intake, and where did you get your filter? did you get it locally or from one of the many mazda performance shops around?
