Just purchased 1989 convertible

I had a 1989 5spd vert from 1995 to 1999 and made several mods to the car.

It was modified with a Bonez cone filter, highflow cat, jacobs electronic ignition, 10mm magnacor wires and underdrive pulleys on the alt and main. It also has a wrapped RB header and HKS 60mm exhaust. The engine had 67000 miles on it when I bought it. I also added a strut tower brace, tokico shocks and springs.

I unfortunately had to sell it because of my expanding family and this was not a practical car. Or so said my wife.

I sold it to a very good friend of mine and at the time it had 101000 miles on it. He treated very well.

Recently( last month) he wanted to sell it and I was able to buy it back. He drove it very little putting 23000 miles on it in 7 years. It would sit for sevral weeks at a time even though I told him it needed to be driven more often.

Now for my questions.

I checked the compression and it read 95 on the front rotor faces and 90-95 on the rear. I w only have a pissedon compression guage, but it is the same guage I used in 99 on the 7 when it read 110 on the front and 105 on the rear.

I checked the plugs and they had a lot of carbon on them and they were changed. He had never cleaned the air filter so I did. He did have the oil changed every 2000 miles and he (unfortunately) did not rev it passed 6000rpm.

The idle was low about 500rpm and a little rough- no hunting, however when the AC was on it smoothes out and idles at 750rpm. Under load it will not rev passed 7500rpm and it also smokes between high rpm shifts. I know when I sold it back in 99 it would hit 8000rpm easily.

What should I do to hopefully return the car to its previous performance condition.

Should I steam the engine or sea foamit? New fuel filter in tank and under passenger seat?

Thanks in advance.

David

I would have it rebuilt while the housings are still good. Sounds like the seals may be giving in to age. (soft seals/control rings)

Better to spend a little money now and have it back to perfect then have to buy new rotors and housings down the road.

Or have it tuned back to OEM standards and see if the high rpm smoke stops...

So when I rebuild it should I have it street ported? What about the 5th qnd 6th ports? I have heard of an insert you can put in to smooth the flow characteristics?

What other internal mods should I do while I have the motor apart?

Thanks,
David

Mild Streetport, leave the 5th and 6th alone if they are functioning as it sits... 3mm seals, 3rd gen springs/endseals....
