Just picked up my first Rotary.

Hello everyone i'm new to the Rx-7 community with the recent purchase of my 1987 TII 5 speed. I picked up the car last night, it has a magnaflow cat/back exhaust, 5 speed, power everything, from what I can tell from a quick once over the car is in excellent shape. The guy I bought it from had no idea how to work on it when he bought it 7 months ago. So it just sat around at his cousins shop until he told me about it and I jumped on it. I started it up last night and drove it up on the tow dolly to bring it back home "he said it wasn't driveable it had a flat rear tire anyway. The car seemed to run fine to me from putting it up on the dolly and taking it off. It was blowing a bit of white/blackish smoke out of the pipes shortly after it was started up. Idled a little low but wasn't bad.

The best part about this whole deal? I bought the car for 500 bucks hahahahaha.
127k miles. I would post pictures but I couldn't find it in the faq. I must just have looked in every wrong spot. Well now time to start reading up and learning more about this beast.

Nice for $500. However... this thread is useless without pics.

I hadn't seen anything like it and I was getting tired of people not understanding... thus... Photoshop to the rescue.

Welcome to the club! And congrats on the good deal it sounds like.

You can wither attach the pictures or host them on www.photobucket.com Just upload them onto it and copy and paste the image location [IMG] on here and youll be set. But please remember to resize them for the slower internet crowd.

Wow, awesome pic. Perfect for new owners. Other good sites are www.aaroncake.net (in the "my car" section) and www.fc3spro.com. The latter has the bible for modifications to turbo cars.
Alos, to post the pic, there is a place to upload it when you are typing out the post. There is a button that says "manage attachments." Click it and then upload your photo. It works a lot like adding an attachment to hotmail or other e-mails.

Ok guys here are a few quick pics I took today before work.

http://s121.photobucket.com/albums/o...&addtype=local

Keep in mind this is how i took delivery of the car and exactly how it sits in my driveway right now without doing anything to it. Last night when putting it on the dolly alot of white smoke was coming out of the exhaust. I think it might be a bad turbo but i'm about to pull it in the garage and check the shaft play and see how bad it is. He told me that the car runs fine for awhile but then the rpms won't stay up and it stalls. I'm gonna go try it out now and see what happens. Thanks for the welcome to the community, I'll be around a alot now

Looks pretty nice, especially the interior.
As for the smoke, when does it smoke? All the time, high revs, just when starting after sitting for a while? Pay attention to the coolant levels and watch for overheating just in case.
Also, I forgot the link for what to do when you get the car: http://aaroncake.net/RX-7/newowner.htm Thats the best writeup I've seen.

The body is very nice all things considered.

Now go ahead and save money for a rebuild. You are on borrowed time...

Ya I sold my 95 trans am and used some of the money to buy this car. I figure i may as well rebuild it now rather than wait. At 127k on the turbo engine and already coming with that magnaflow exhaust and a k&n someone has had their foot in it deep for awhile. Might as well rebuild it so i can start shoving my foot in it hahaha.

That link doesn't seem to work, unfortunately... (hopefully it's not just me that can't get it to work. :P)

I am talking to the guy who I bought the car from and he just told me that the intercooler doesn't have any lubricant in it. He said when it's running there is no lubricant coming through the intercooler. I assume this means the intercooler is toast and smoked the turbo. I don't know anything about this top mount intercooler as i've never owned a turbo car. Doesn't the intercooler just run from the radiator fluid as a coolant? Does the car have to be running for the intercooler to have fluid running thruogh it?

i have basically the same thing, it will serve you well

welcome to the club

btw, whoever you were talking about about the intercooler is a fucktard. Our intercoolers are air to air, that means that they air coming through the scoop on the hood is used to cool the air directly, instead of a radiator water. Intercoolers contain no moving parts and do not require lubricant. However, if he was talking about something else, it woudl be a good idea to find out what it is.

The intercooler does not require any lubricant. White smoke might be a sign of bad coolant seals. Do a full tuneup and lets see what happens. You scored buddy, cherish your car!

Ya i'm going to do a full tuneup and see what happens from there. If the smoke is still puffing strong i'm going to replace the turbo. I probably should rebuild it but I figure drive it till it pukes then rebuild bigger stronger and more psi hahaha.
