just got turbo vert running........
hey guys. Ok, for those of you that don't know already, I am a total rotary noob. I sold my buick grand national last year, and my dad came up on this 89 rx7 convertible a couple months ago. He bought a complete engine with turbo, fmic, trans, everything, and we just had it put in the convertible. This is supposed to be one bad *** setup in this car. I have a couple of questions and I hope you guys can help. I know what kind of boost a GN can handle on pump gas, how bout the rotary? While driving it home last night I was seeingabout 7-8 psi on the old boost guage. Now, I will be posting pics later of the engine that is in this car, and maybe you guys can shed some light as to what is on it. On my GN, I could push 17 psi on good pump gas and it would really haul ***! Can I do that on the RX? Also, after driving the car easily for about 10 minutes, the turbo and downpipe were glowing red! WTF? I'm sure this car is just out of tune. Any tips are welcome, and remember, I will post pics after work today for further help.

I have a base so don't quote me but i don't think you can really go much higher then 8psi on a stock tubo, but with a SAFC you can run a good bit of boost if your turbo can keep of with it, and with the FMIC you might have already taken care of the overheating problems, as for the glowing turbo and downpipe, you could have a clogged catalytic converter or be running really rich

I'll blow it up real good

If the your exhaust is glowing, you are probably lean, not rich.
You can also run 17 psi on pump gas with rotaries especially S4 13bt since they have lower compression rotors. You would need a standalone, better turbo, upgraded fuel setup etc.
With stock turbos etc, no fcd, you will get fuel cut (kaboom) with anything over 10 (can't remember exactly) psi. They make a piggyback to fix this problem.
Just upgrading to a nice free-flowing exhaust can get the engine to see fuel cut.
Check out his site and click the modifications link. This site is about the best all around resource for 2nd gens.

On the stock turbo, you don't want to go above 12 PSI.
Above about 9PSI or so, you will need fuel mods. Start with fuel pump. Once you get past 10, you will want to upgrade the secondary injectors to stay safe. There are going to be a bunch of people tellig me that's not necessary at only 10 PSI, but staying safe is better then blowing an engine. You'll need something like an S-AFC to control those larger injectors.
As for the turbo and downpipe glowing red, the car is either running super rich or the timing is retarded.

You'll also want a FCD from racing beat OR one of the new ECUs that get rid of fuel cut and tune our cars for certain mods. You'll have to search to find what I'm talking about.
Does the car have a catalytic converter? It could be clogged. I kind of doubt you are running lean if you are actually seeing 7-8psi. Do you know what ecu was swapped into the car? I'm just wondering if the correct impedence injectors were mated with the right ECU. Also if it is running lean, it could be a voltage problem to the pump or dirty fuel filter or dirty injectors. Many things to look for.
