Just got a 1986 rx7!

Hey, I just got ahold of a 1986 rx7 for like $600 from a guy who needed rent money, heh.

It's a GXL model with automatic I believe, but the whole car is kind of ghetto, a lot is missing from the interior but what's there is in pretty good shape (it's missing the whole center console/radio peice).

I'm just wondering what kind of maintenance these cars need, I did a few googles and couldn't find anything really specific other then "make sure you change the oil every 3000 miles or less."

Also, the passenger window dosen't roll down and the guy kept telling me it was "2 metal things at the bottom" and was referring to the switch.

And the whole car shakes when I put it into reverse or drive, but i've been told by a friend this is a bad motor mount.

Anyway, I bought this car as a cheap and fun DD replacement for my 1990 BMW 325i which gets more and more expensive everyday!

Someone show me some links to stuff I absolutely have to know.

welcome aboard. Should be a fun car to own. I made a gamble nearly 2 years ago and got my 86, not knowing much about rx7s, and I love it, best car I ever bought.

Yeah, I bought a 1988 GTU, and I REALLY wish I knew then what I know now. But that car treated me good, when it wasn't blowing clutch parts, leaking oil, and not starting. :P Definitely a car that is fun to drive.

Doing the reliability mods is very important (look especially at the pulsation damper.)

RX7s are very fun to drive (especially with a manual.) I think that if I were you, that would be my first swap (auto-manual.)

Welcome to the club. I would learn how to use the search engine and make a bookmark to the FSM which is here.

RX7s are fun to autoX (they require a lot of practice to drive at the limit), you may want to look into local autoX clubs.

If you have the stock mufflers and sound deadening in that GXL you will have to watch your speed carefully on the interstate (or just set the cruise), they are very quiet and smooth at 80-90 mph (which I reckon will get one in trouble in Florida.)
