was just wondering if anyone could give me an estimate for the cost of building a s5 tII from the ground up using all brand new (or remaned) parts from the factory. (or aftermarket where applicable) NO im not planning on doing this. i just want to pipe dream and think that one day, i could dump 20k into a 100% brand new fc.

i think i would be upwards of 20k but i honestly have no idea.

 

seeing as how with inflation the $20,000 car in 1989 is now ~$36,000 assuming 3% inflation I think you need to start thinking a little more and posting less.

I was once told by a friend of mine who was incredibly bored one day at the Caddy dealership that he added up over $100,000 in parts and that wasn't including a body. I forgot which model but you get the idea

 

I'm pretty sure I saw at one point that it'd cost like $65k to make a new car that retails for $20-25k. I've no real evidence, but basically, it'd be WAY the hell too expensive.

 

Your best bet for a new FC (not a S5 though) would be to contact Johnyzoom on this board and have a load of $$$$$$.

He's local to me and has a 10th Anniversary with ~7100 miles on it. It still has that new car smell, mmmm brand new 20 year old leather ...drool...

Maybe, one day I can convince to let me drive it and experience how a "NEW" FC drives.

There have been a few that have restored FC's, but generally it'll cost probably 3x as much at least to rebuild a car using all new parts. I would not be surprised in the least if it cost $50k to build an all new TII.

 

thats not a new car though, see you still have to consider dry rot and all that other stuff that effects 20year old plastic, rubber, and metal. so yes, it might only have 7000 miles on it but i would imagine it REALLY isnt like anything new.

you know how when you buy a new demister grill, it has that super crisp smell and feel? you can feel its structural integrity and you just know its new. and you know when you have to buy that new pain in the *** engine part that you cant find used? just imagine the whole damn engine looking and smelling like that...mmmm
now thats what im talkin about. sometime i wish i could have been on that production line and see those suckers right as come out of the factory. not a single dirty or old part on it. not one. ...and for the record, i feel like a giant nerd for say that, but **** it. im sure there is someone who feels the same. i mean, come on...to have an rx7 with 0 miles on it? isnt it worth all the suffering people in africa?

 

In the early 1970s (1972, I think), Car and Driver magazine published an article wherein they totalled up the cost of all the parts in a Chevy Impala, based on a then-current dealer price list. At that time, the Impala could be bought, new, for a little over $5000. The cost of all the parts - after the dealer markup - was over $25,000. Considering the obscene parts prices at my local Mazda dealer, I don't think it would be unreasonable to assume that buying all the parts to assemble a new car would be roughly five times the original selling price of the car.

 

You won the lottery, and were very bored, then you literally order every part from the Mazda dealership, weld up the body and build the car from scratch. All the sheet metal is available, as well as all the mechanical components so you could build the entire car yourself.

The cost would likely be well over $150,000 considering the individual cost of the components.

In the case of a lottery winner, how about having the unibody recreated in aluminum?

 

You obviously have never seen this car. It is for all intents and purposes, brand new. Nothing is dirty, nothing is broken or scratched. It has lived its life garaged and car covered.

Consider this: It has traveled the distance of 2 oil changes in 20 years. Thats 350 miles a year, or ~7 miles a week since new. People rack up that many miles in 6 months now....

buy the absolutly cleanest car you can start with, rustproof the living **** out of it (POR-15, rustbullet, something good), and then replace any of the busted/missing interior/weather stripping pieces (all still available for the mostpart) and give the suspension a once over with new bushings, shocks, springs. and it'll be as good as new, especially if the chassis has low kms.

hell if you're really intrepid, you can put new DTSS bushings in, it ain't cheap, but if you're doing a proper resto, might as well get all the little details down right

restoring an old japanese car is on my list of things to do before an untimely death. i want to own one 100% original Fb, FC, FD and an all mazdaspeed parts tuned FD as well (which according to ramy is going to be just about impossible to do since they discontinued everything and i died a little bit inside). that would be my dream garage.

Buy a car with a low amount of rust, and that already has the interior you are looking for. Strip it down to a shell, mediablast and paint everything. Seam weld, stich weld, replace all the bolts and wear items, new engine trans rear end etc.

It's a theoretical discussion. It's doubtful that anyone would ever do something like this, but I think it's all crossed our minds.

Still, there are loads of clean FC bodies around so it would be a bit odd to create one from scratch. The cost of dipping a good body would be far less then welding together sheetmetal purchased from the dealer.

There are so many FCs around that this effort should be saved for the more rare rotary cars anyway. For example, here's my next project, a '76 RX-5 Cosmo:
