just bought my first 7
hey i just got a 1987 rx 7 with a 1989 motor going in it...i was wondering what i should do for my first mods...i was thinking the suspesion was the first thing i wanted to do...for the reason that it does not matter how much power i have unless i can control it....any suggestions on what to do for a suspession...i know nothing about them....but i gues il have to learn...and i also read somewhere its a good idea to start with an s afc before you start to mod...was wondering what you opioions were on that too...thank you in advance...

Congrats!
First make sure it is running right with no problems in idling and rpm range. Then check all the stock components really well to make sure what you need and do not need to replace.
Then maybe do exhaust and intake, if its an NA you really do not need any fuel mods. After that do maybe get a nice suspension setup like struts/shock/coilovers. Stainless steel brake lines. Well you really need to decide what you want to do with the car first....

Hey, congrats, I'm in the same boat as you, i just bought a 88 gxl three weeks back. They are awesome machines.
Do maintanence, then suspension. Use the search there are lots of great info on the boards.
If youre looking for a lot of power go turbo
-or-
Street port, CAI, True dual exhuast (mazdatrix or custom), and maybe even lightened rotors?
But since the N/A tranny sux, look to rebuild it with all that power going into the tranny.
P.S. to make you're car faster and handle better the best way to do that is weight reduction, it helps every aspect of performance. If you're hood is the steel one, it weights like 38 lbs. iirc, get a CF, make sure to get hood pins!!!

in similar boat. got my 86 4 weeks ago. i agree with a nose to tail tune up. what are some well proven suspension upgrades, that helps the handling? tires, polyurethane suspension bushings? what are some really good tires that anyone would recommend?

An FC will handle well with unworn suspension parts. If you car has alot of miles your shocks, springs, and bushing could be pretty worn. I run 225/50/15 Yokohama ES100s on my car with GXL rims. Good tires. Pretty cheap too.

Well then you should look at some Eibach or Racing Beat springs. Both are about a 1" drop. You can get some Eibachs that are progressive, which are alittle more streetable. The Racing Beat are alittle more trackworthy.

tockico makes some pretty good stuff....coilovers would be pretty neat if you got the $$$
I would say little things like intake, plugs, wires......basically a nice tune up would be cheap and make your car run alot better especially if it has been a while since its last one.
a nice exhaust would be neat if you had some more $$$
it all depends on $$$ and what you want out of your vehicle
AND MOST OF ALL ENJOY YOUR NEW RIDE! YOU'LL LOVE IT!
