just bought 90 gxl
Well last week i bought a 1990 gxl. motor has about 15,000 miles on it. the car runs great and all but i have a couple questions. (im new to rotary engines) The car is completely stock except for a test pipe that is to big a diameter but i made it work. Well the car pulls strong sometime all the way to redline. but sometimes it gives out at like 7000. and sometimes it doest seem as strong at like 3500,4000 like some other times. i cant figure it out.
I know the clutch is bad. i did the 50/50 tranny fluid thing. sometimes when i shift at high rpm it grinds. it happens when i have been driving the car hard for a while. when cold it shifts fine. what could be the problem.
what mods can be done to gain the most power.

I also own a '90 GXL. Mine has always run out of steam at 7000 rpm. If I remember correctly, the stock hp is 160 @ 4000 rpm and my powerband is the fattest right in that range.I usually go to 6000 at least once or twice a day to help keep carbon buildup at a minimum, and with a stock engine it's not of much use to go past it. Part of what it takes to free up power in your engine starts with the exhaust, there are a few manufacturers of complete systems or cat-back systems that help make power. The best mods take place during a rebuild, the n/a engines have baffles in the exhaust ports of the rotor housings which can be removed or the sleeves replaced with turbo housing sleeves, also top-end power can be made by porting the side housings, which changes the intake and exhaust port timing, similar to a cam grind on a boinger. As for your hesitation at around 4000, there are several threads on this topic such as ground path improvement, injector upgrades, etc. The secondary injectors kick in at around 3800 rpm, and if the engine has been "babyed", those injectors may be dirty and causing a lean stumble. I like to use BG 44K in the tank once or twice a year to keep carbon down and injectors clean. As for the gear grind, assuming the clutch hydraulics are sound and there isn't air in the lines, you may have worn synchro rings which will engage more smoothly with cold oil temps and grind when the oil thins out. Good luck.
