Category 4
Applicable Model/s 1986-1988 RX-7
Subject ROUGH IDLE
Bulletin No. 047/88
Issued 4/22/88
Revised

DESCRIPTION

If a customer complains of a rough idle, check the water temperature switch and related wiring. The water temperature switch wiring could be damaged and may not be detected while checking voltages with the engine off.

Should you encounter the above condition, refer to the following procedures.

CHECKING PROCEDURE

1. Connect the engine signal monitor to the control unit. Refer to the 1987/1988 RX-7 Workshop Manual, page 4A-30 or 4B-31.

2. Warm up the engine to normal temperature.

3. Monitor voltage at terminal 1H for correct voltage under the following conditions:

- engine off, key on
- engine idling
- engine acceleration and deceleration in neutral

NOTE:
The voltage should be below 1.5V with warm engine.

4. If any voltage fluctuation is noted, inspect the water temperature switch wiring especially near the radiator where the harness is tie-wrapped to the oil cooler lines.

5. If open or damaged wire is found, repair as needed.

TSB 89-27 (Sept)

SUBJECT: TWENTY STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL TRANSMISSION REPAIR

1. As you start work on a transmission, read your ATRA bulletins pertaining to that transmission. (If you do this every time, before you know it you'll have the bulletins memorized.)

2. Clean the entire transmission, including the valve body.

3. Check pumps, valve bodies, and cases for warpage.

4. Flat file pumps, valve bodies, and cases. (Just a few strokes with the file to knock off high spots and handle burrs.)

5. Check all pump gear clearances.

6. Check planet pinion endplay and side to side motion.

7. Soak all planet assemblies.

8. Soak all friction material for 15-30 minutes.

9. Sand, tumble, or replace all steel plates.

10. Re-surface all drums on which a band rides.

11. Replace all rotating oi1 control rings.

12. Check all oil control rings, and rubber products in their bores for proper fit.

13. Replace all major support bushings and bushings that control lube oil.

14. Pre-lubricate all bushings and thrust washers.

15. Pre-lube pumps.

16. Pre-fill torque converters.

17. Use available manuals to find specifications.

18. Set correct clutch and band clearances

19. Take the time to set total unit endplay

20. Use a torque wrench on all pumps and valve bodies.

APPLICABLE MODELS

All models except Navajo and 1994 and on B-Series

DESCRIPTION

This bulletin provides background information on standard specification and measuring conditions for wheel alignment.

Measured values are not absolute. Variations occur between technician, equipment and the condition of the vehicle at the time of measurement. To avoid unnecessary adjustments, specifications and measurement conditions have been changed in the workshop manual. These changes are described below.

NOTE :Changes in the specifications do not imply that alignment tolerances have increased during production. Vehicle alignment is set to the median specifications during production and technicians should also use median specifications during alignment adjustment.

NEW SPECIFICATIONS

NOTE :Each vehicle varies in specification median.

VEHICLE PREPARATION AND CONDITION

1. The vehicle should have:

^ No Passengers

^ No Luggage

^ Gas Tank Full, Radiator and Engine Oil To The Specified Levels

^ Spare Tire, Jack And Tools Stored In Designated Areas

^ Tire Pressure Checked And, If Necessary, Adjusted.

NOTE :If the specifications are different (depending on load conditions), adjust the pressure for the lightest load.

2. The table contains examples of front caster specifications based on fuel tank level.

3. Follow the operating procedures specified for the alignment equipment being used.

4. Prior to measuring the current settings, firmly push the vehicle bumper up and down to stabilize the vehicle's height.
