Just bought an '02 Yamaha R1

This bike is FAST! I actually raced an FC. Beat him by about 3 car lengths (engine on bike is still being broke in). Can't go too fast.

Hmmm let's think about this though: 2500 lb car vs. 400 lb sport bike. No contest. I did appreciate him playing though and I had a nice parting gift for him.... exhaust vapors and the vision of my bike disappearing over the next hill I felt bad for him and almost felt like I betrayed my own kind

That is definitely a sweet bike..though a little too much power for me..I'll stick to my 600CC..

What sort of power is the '02 making? What exhaust you gonna put on it? What color did you get?

We sell those bikes at the shop I work at. Those things are nuts!

Yamaha just took that same motor and stuck in the new 2003 RX-1 snowmobile. Try to figure out that one. In line 4 cylinder engine pushing roughly 145 hp in a couple hundred pound snowmobile chasis.

Fatalities are gonna be through the roof.

If you mod that bike out half as much as you did your 87, it will be scary fast, if you don't already think it is.

my bike is blue and white, and for exhaust I don't know what to put on it. I'm fairly new to the bike scene.

Yoshimura (sp?) handles some good slip-on and full-replacement exhaust systems. Cobra also makes a few.

I will do some research on it tomorrow when I go back to work. I have Monday off for class, so not at the shop.

Also, Yamaha offers some great performance parts direct from the GYT-R team. (Genuine Yamaha Team Racing)

They offer hi-po cams, CF parts to lighten the load, and some killer graphics packages. The CF parts, if I am not mistaken, even include a new CF OEM muffler that is 7 lbs lighter. But, on an R1, who needs more power? Any RX-7/R1 owner would!

Oh, I will check into this as well: No Fear offered some Yamaha/Mazda hats. I own one personally, but I am not sure if we have any left in stock. If we do, and you are interested, I can ship it to you. LMK. Prolly $20 shipped or so.

Thumbs up

The GYT-R parts are pretty expensive compared to other brands. Even the parts for the dirt bikes are up there in price.

The R1 is a VERY nice bike...but, on the latest Sport Bike mag....they mentioned that it still might not hold off the GSXR1k in the sheer HP department. Handling....we will see.

FYI...I think the 1kcc and under 4 cylinders should be racing in the WSB Series...the 750's are getting smoked and the v-twins are getting insainly fast. This weekend in SUGO, the v-twins went 20 seconds faster that last years record....****** FAST.

Damn.

Honestly, you have to compare OEM and aftermarket parts on a part by part basis.

I have priced Raptor (ATV) parts for aluminum skid plates and such. DG made some plates and some were more expensive aftermarket and Yamaha was more expensive on the other end.

Check both before buying and contact me if you need something. I will see what I can do on hooking you up with some sort of deal on something.

www.yoshimura-rd.com

They have alot of performance parts for the YZFR1.

Check them out. Cams, sprockets, exhaust, etc.

In regards to the "more" power issue....the power of the new R1 IS enough. I had taken my (stock) 750 to track days here in Cali...and still cant ring out all the revs on the straight-a-ways. I had straddled the past R1 for a wring and still too, too much power (well that was a fully modifed R1).

I have seen GSXR1k's wheelie out of turns...the R1 should do the same....way too much power for the mere mortal....why modify it. Not unless you are Haga.
