just baught first rx-7

well i should be picking the 87 turbo II up sometime next week and i was wondering where to start with it..what are the most common first mods made to the car, and most effective...i should have anywhere between 5-7k to put into the car once i get it

mind you i am most definetly going for the sleeper look, i dont want those kids in highschool pulling up next to me driving a cavaleir with a cat-back from walmart revving up next to me.

im not new to modding cars either this is just my second project (first one was my first car (00 cougar) huge waste of money, after about $20,000 invested in that car it was still running a 14.7 at the track if it was a good day and i drove flawlessy

thats what I would have said but seriously do what probably not even half the rx7 owners do and replace everything broken first and change all your fluids like clutch, brakes, power steering, tranny, diff, engine, properly maintain your car, I dont know how many meets I have been to and a rx7 starts having problems due to lack of maintainance because the owner would rather have a boost controller or rims rather than a functioning cooling system or leaks everywhere

stech: thats the best idea ive never heard...and very true your 100% right, most people would jump in and kill the engine before they had fun with it

after that though what else would make a big difference in power, ive never owned a turboed car, or a rotory powered car for than matter, what is the maximum reliable amount of boost to run without internal mods? my guess would be about 8lbs?

does running larger injectors need other modification with air/fuel control? all ive seen on the searchs were people changing out the injectors and seeing instant resaults, but im positive there more tuning behind it

also, ive always ran mobil1 synthetic in all of my cars, is there a different oil that would be better for the rotary? besides the expensive ones, or maybe the expensive ones? ( royal purple, amsoil etc.)

Mazda doesn't recommend running Synthetic oils correct in Rotarys, not sure about the RX8 though.

if the car is already stock heed everyone elses call and tune it up .. make sure its running like a champ first .. even stock these cars are fun ..

emissions removal - cleans up the engine bay and simplifies things (obviously only if you live somewhere that doesnt test)

exhaust - probably the biggest bang for your buck
racingbeat claims 59 HP from that alone (due to increased boost)
(be sure to read up on upgrading the exhaust though cause you'll need atleast a
FCD (fuel cut defenser) to keep from running lean and popping your motor....
(i actually have an FCD i can sell you if you want)

upgrade the ecu with help from RTEK (pocketlogger.com)

make a decent intake for next to nothing

etc etc ...

many people have made threads like this and they pretty much all read the same
tune up
bolt ons

you'll be happy with the power that you'll make with just a few basic bolt ons

with exhaust and intake alone you'll notice pretty big gains for under 1200 bucks

racing beat makes a KILLER turbo back exhaust .. .they are pricey, but they are top shelf .. i recommend them to anyone ..

my old car is on ebay now if ya wanna take a look..I AM NOT ADVERTIZING just showing it off cuz i think its a good looking car

so whats hte opinion on the oil...YAY or NAY to synthetic oils? (good thing i asked because i would immediatly change the oil out with mobile 1)

Build an exhaust and save you moeny on suspension. RB is nice but you can build a good system for almost half the price.

Suspension! tires, brake pads!!! if your gonna go you need to stop and turn as well. Grab yourself coilovers, or at least performace springs and struts. get a competiton diff. mount as for exhaust, Borla makes a great catback for the FC3S i love mine, simple and almost stock looking great sounds a build quality

yeah i agree with almost everybody in here, first change the fluids, then change out ur plugs, plug wires, air filter(i would suggest getting a k&n...most air u can get out of ur rx with any air intake kit) and get a full performance exhaust, will feel a hell of a differance in car with that, then get rims, tv, system, etc

full exhaust and fuel cut defender would be good mods after all the maintainance is done. The thing you need to understand though is that the stock turbo, especially on the s4 cars (87-88), has a pitiful wastegate. You could easily spike and risk damage to the car. Thus many people pull the turbo and port the wastegate.

Right, because we all know that an RX7 needs a TV while going down the road. This isnt pimp my piece.

what would be involved in porting the wastegate?

also what would be involved in putting a blowoff valve in there? would it help that problem?
