Junk in the trunk (nasty clunking noise coming from rear)

yeah i know my car doesn't have a trunk...

a few months ago i was at a light, i had the red but i was making a right turn so i was waiting for the cars to pass and a chance to go. i was on a slight incline so i had my foot on the brake to stop from going backwards. at the time no one was behind me. 10 seconds later or so i let off the brake and totally forget to look behind me. boom. i "back up" into some girl (around my age) going no more than 5mph, really. one hell of a jolt though. the rear bumper looks fine, just as it did before the incident. we shrugged it off, i was late to work and both our cars were fine. since then however something seems to be "loose" back there. for example i'll be crusing down the road going 40-45mph and cross an intersection, we all know how most intersections aren't very level, well when i hit the bumps of the road, you can just hear something rattling and clunking back there. or when i'm going down a straight road and some minor or even big bumps are in the road, you can hear it also, kind of like the gas tank is moving around (jumping up and down actually) back there, but i'd doubting it's the tank. my jack and spare is removed, my whole rear end is gutted, i see nothing. i've even look under the car but nothing seems out of place. could it be something behind the bumper cover that may have become loose/undone and that you couldn't see unless the rear bumper cover was taken off? i'm just clueless as what is behind the cover - isn't it like a big metal bar and that's it? anyone know what else could it be?

and if you have any tips or removing the rear bumper cover, please feel free to share.

There are two styrofoam reinforcements in the back bumper. They sit between the cover and the bumper itself to supress small collisions (probably why your bumper wasn't dented.) Perhaps one of them came apart and is bouncing around? Also check and make sure your exhaust isn't loose.

The rear bumper cover isn't that difficult to remove. you can access the top bolts from behind the rear carpet, beneath the bolts for the taillights. Also, I believe there are two or three on each side that can be accessed through the wheel well. Use a really long extension
