Just like the title says ... my engine is blown and it may just be cheaper to buy a rebuilt engine and drop it in. Are jspec and usdm shortblocks for an s5 13bt interchangeable?

No difference at all. The thing to keep in mind is that a J-spec is just a used engine from japan, nothing special about it, and it should be rebuilt prior to installation anyway.
