Jjust started my Jspec 13bt swap... Smoke coming from turbo...

Ok so i just started my s5 tii swap and i have one concern. They is smoke coming from the turbo and the exhaust. I only let it run for about 5mins so i could just be all the oil i have been putting in it over the last month to condition the seals but my friend insists that its a blown seal in the turbo. I can see that the smoke is coming coming from oil that it coming out of the space between the metal piece that is in between the turbo and the downpipe. you can see oil coming out of the space between the turbo and the backplate spacer thing. SO what do you think. Should i let it run and see if it stops? Im just afraid ill break something.

Let it run, keep an eye on the oil pressure guage also. Do you have the exhuast bolted on or just open tubo? Is it alittle smoke or smoking alot? Also check the turbo for shaft play.. should be tiny bit of up and down, but back and forth should be none.

Let it run for a bit and see if it clears up.

it could be oil seals in the motor. i've actually never heard of a jspec that has a blown turbo... not sure.

Blown seals create huge amount of smoke... but u said coming from the end of the turbo....hmmm not quite sure. I would do a poor man's compression check on the rotors...

I have the same problem. Oil leaks from one of the lines, if you did not change the gasket like me, most likely it is leaking on the HOT turbo and is burning off. Its nothing major if that is it. See if you can see any leaks, the one on top and the one on bottom. Mine leaks from the bottom.

oil takes time to burn off, its common anytime you touch the exhaust or internals of a motor for parts of the exhaust to smoke anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes.

it smokes because of lubrication and oil used to condition the parts during rebuild. Even when my friend changed the exhaust on his protege it smoked a little because he used corrosion spray for his rusted nuts and bolts. then a little oil to lube them and a new lubed gasket and it shot out some blue-ish smoke for about 10 seconds (blue indicates burning oil), now take that small exhaust(axelback) swap, and multiply it's effects into every seal of a rotary engine, and your boud to get some oil/lube burnoff on the first start. Also break in the engine for about 30 mins before you drive and drive carefully for the first 1,000 miles or so. Get it to high revs, then low revs and don't keep your revs constant, you want your engine to adjust to different throttle positions, but when I say rev AND drive carefully, I just mean you can go into high revs, just no redlining or getting up to those revs rapidly, try to make the smoothest transitions you can. Follow these directions and your new JDM, rebuilt, or brand new rotary should run fine and all that msoke on first startup is necessary, hope I helped clear the air of any concerns and those who want an engine rebuild or got one and wondered what all the smoke was from.
