the J-Swap Cub

As i approach 2000 miles in my recent j-swap i was wondering how many of us are in this club?I've read a few people saying that j-spec motors tend to be crap so let's hear some first-hand accounts. How many miles do y'all have on your j-swaps (or did you get before it grenaded, killing your neighbor's cat ) and how much of your swap stayed original and what was pulled(emmissions, omp, ecu, intercooler?)

I just got my vert up and running.

The motor has:

Stage 1 clutch
maztrix flywheel
I kept the ASV and BAC.
All emissions gone
racing beat downpipe
Jasma cat back (getting mid pipe done today)
Rtek 1.7

and some other goodies.

No miles yet...too loud.

When i got my J-spec it wouldnt even turn over at all. It took a breaker bar just to get it to spin over. Couldnt afford a rebuild, so i figured wth! I Stripped all the emissions and let it soak in MMO for 3 months and then finally almost a year later dropped it in and after 6 hrs of tinkering it started. I only have a few hundred miles on it now but it runs like a champ on 10-12psi... Im REALLY suprised. But i figure its just a matter of time before it goes KABOOOm, hopefully ill get to rebuild it before then

Greddy PE exhaust
Greddy FMIC
ALL Emissions are gone
A/C and P/S removed
2.5" DP
N351(N/A) ecu
TB Mod & ported
80 psi oil bypass
pineapple alt relocation.
etc.....

Yeah, mine runs great (except the turbo is making noise). I'm sure running 10-12 psi on it didn't help. It pulls 17" of vac. at 720rpm idle.....nice and smooth. I guess I have about 2000 miles on it. Getting a BNR stage 3 and front mount soon.

Im not a Jswaper. but from what I can tell, ANY engine you get that isnt fully rebuilt is a gamble. Even with other engines other than 13bs. its about as much of a gamble as getting one from a pick N pull, except your paying someone to pull it and deliver it to you. Ive heard good stories and bad ones, someone got lucky and got an OS Giken clutchkit with the engine they recived, some are more lucky that they plug the engine in and it works for a long time, but some are not so lucky.

A majority of engines that we get werent pulled fresh from a running car, more times than not they end up getting them out of JYs and then they sit on a shelf untill bought. the comon thing I hear of is getting a Jspec with bad coolent seals, or oil seals, or worn housings.

Bottom line its a gamble unless you rebuild it as soon as you get it which I think is always a good idea. if you bought a Jspec, you probably spent $1000, I think another 1k is worth it to make sure your engine works for another 200,000miles, not to mention you can mod and upgrade then

I got a JDM in my black t2...it has work amazing for over a year and a half, probably 15k-20k miles...when I got it there was some issues with the JDM intercooler and some other things and so we used the USDM intake manifolds and turbo, incooler etc. I will probably drive the hell out of it till it blows, then rebuild the old USDM one (I might start the rebuild before it blows though).

my j-swap went into my 86 gxl. the motor lasted about a week before puking an apex seal. i rebuilt it using pretty much everything from the na motor except the irons and manifolds. even used the na rotors, housings and e shaft. i had to drill out the rear housing but it wasnt too hard. i love my motor but went about 2k over budget..

car also has 680cc gsl se injectors 255pump tubular manifold s5 turbo rb 80mm dp re-a 80mm single side exhaust and a few other nic nacks

if i had to do it all again i would just buy a running t2 and save a thousand bucks

I got the motor in the car, but not started yet (I'm missing the whole wire harness that runs to the back of the car). Compression in the rear rotor is strong, but really low up front. I'm hoping that the seals are just stuck. I'm gonna try letting it soak in MMO.

well, when i got mine, the bottom actuator on the exhaust manifold was crushed, and the intercooler was crushed. i tore it apart, rebuild, apexi GT exhuast, bonez intake and down/midpipes, ACT streetlite flywheel, RC 750 sec. with Rtek 1.7, afc neo, most crap removed, FD denso upgrade pump (whatever the hell its called- www.rx7.com) lots of other goodies.
i beat the **** out of it, never had any problems that were not my fault to begin with.
oh, and the turbo needed a new compressor wheel. no play at all, just bent a little to much to my liking.
all in all satisfied. pushing 10k in parts and tools.....
not quite done yet. BNR here i come....
