J-Spec Motor Swap?

I tried searching, but didn't really find what I was looking for. I also tried posting in the Canadian forum, but I would like to hear opinions on the subject from other people.

Hello, I am currently considering the purchase of an 86 N/A with a motor in need of a rebuild and would very much appreciate any insight into my options.

I inquired to CP Racing (in Toronto) as to an engine rebuild, and he quoted me at around $2000 (Canadian) for new housings, rotors, and all seals + labour etc. Yet, as we talked further he mentioned that he could get me a j-spec engine for much less. I know they are used, but with low mileage. I also like the fact that they are turbo. I was just wondering if anyone could please answer a few of my questions relating to them?

- How reliable are the turbo 1.3b's? In terms of how much money in maintenance and repairs would I have to put in typically within a year?

- Approximately how long would the motor last me given proper maintenance (also with only light mods, ie intake and exhaust)?

- What other components, if any, would I have to buy to complete the install?

- Are there any shops within London-Toronto that could do the swap? Approximately how much would the swap cost?

- Would the engine pass emissions in Ontario?

- What sort of gas mileage can I expect?

- Will the 86 N/A tranny hold up to the motors power?

- I've heard people having problems with these engines shortly after installs, any truth to this?

Any answers or other advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

In the words of George Castanza:

"Why must there always be a problem!?!"

Back from teenage dreams of BOV's to driving the family ford. *sigh*
