JDM FTPs turn on with your headlights/running lights

Mine are stock JDM and plug into my JDM front harness and they turn on with my headlights/running lights.

The JSpec FTPs are not flashing to pass. They stay on rather than the turn signals in USDM, The head lights in JSpec come up, like the 240sx n other cars with flip up to Flash to pass. But the turn signals on JSpec are just to turn not to as parking lights. The Jspec FTPs are Parking lights. If you didnt understand what I just wrote check the video out. All these Rx7 people n alot of you slacking. sad

I have my S4 wired so they came on with Parking lights, But I custom drilled the USDM FTPs n put bulbs in them.

i took my usdm lense apart when i first got em, to polish em etc.. now im curious could probably make some replicas using some defuser lense and some leftover side markers

 

if you reaaaaaaaaaaaly wanted to, you could use the fog lights and put them inside the ftp and then you can switch your ftps on and off with the fog light switch.

 

Or you can do what I did:





3 High intensity waterproof LED spotlights run to a fuse & switch. Simple, very easy to do, last nearly forever and will decimate the light output of the stock JDM FTPs and probably any other bulb you can put in there. Gonna redo my idea with 4 LED spotlights per side.

When I flash to pass while behind someone they WILL see it.

 

THAT right there is a good idea. I would love to see some pics with them installed on the car and lite up. I just wouldn't want to see 12 (6 for the Led's, 4 Hella 90mm -Need-a-tiis converstion, and two fogs = 12) individual lights when I had the front of my car lite up. I would hope they would blend together. Any pics like that Juiceh?

i might try to replicate the jdm ones and do a write up if i can find another 240sx side marker around my house to hack up *I only have one =(

 

weeeee i jus made some replicas lmao.. went to walmart and got some $1.97 side markers..

I broke one of my ftp lense *the passanger side*, the drivers side i was able to remove the lense, but the other side, was different, i dunno if there was a difference between the lense.

I think they replicate the look pretty good.. for cheap too..
I put some aluminum sheeting inside to reflect the light.. It doesnt get defused too well, but from the looks of the JDM units, it looks very simular.

Ill have a write up soon.. i just need to get another ftp lense so i can make the other side

 

Here is a picture of my 90 GTUs with JDM FTP installed.
You can just unplugg the side markers and plug these in.
I bought mines for $110 shipped from japan.

This is actually my car....they are the flash to pass from corksport. It was fairly dark in that parking lot so that's why they look so bright. They aren't all that bright out in the daylight.

I have read that the JDM lights were originally for the Canadian market and needed to meet their requirements for daylight driving lights. They are intended to be on all the time until you turn on your headlights and they switch off. I wonder if the US wiring harness includes a socket to attach these? If not, will an LED Driving Light wiring kit with a battery load sensor turn the unit off when the headlights are turned on. Or do you need LEDs for it to work?

 

i bought a set of real JDM FTP's, and also have the wiring diagram for the JDM car.

so first off the canadian cars have some DRL thing, which i think uses the normal headlight thru the US style FTP, but i'm not really sure... never seen one, but its in the wiring diagrams, actually S5 cars might just run the foglights.

so anyways, the JDM cars have a couple of small differences to the US car.

the JDM FTP uses a 904 bulb, like the side marker, and it is wired in like the side marker. so the JDM car has the same 4 bulbs in the parking light circuit, it is just that it does not have the rear side markers, and instead has the FTP's.

the second small difference is that the JDM turn signal uses a single filament bulb, so the turn signal is only a turn signal, and not a turn signal/parking light like the US cars got. the JDM turn signal just has 2 wires and not 3 like we got.

the JDM lights are not plug and play, but it is very easy to splice them into the parking light circuit.

there are a couple if disappointments, as the JDM FTP is still plastic, and the 904 bulb isn't very bright.

 

I've had a pair of JDM's for years that I'm finally getting around to installing. So what I'm getting from this thread and the video is that, in regards to JDM RX-7's only, turn signal bulbs are for turn signals only, the FTP's are parking lamps and stay on when the headlights are up, and they are the same bulb and wiring as the side marker lights. Also if you install a pair in a USDM car you need to (or can) wire them up to come on whenever or however you want.

I found in my Maintenance Manual the reference to the Canadian DRL (Daylight Running Lights) that they are just the fog lamps wired to stay on all the time, except when the high beams are on.

 

I got tired of other drivers not seeing my 'vert in the daytime and having several SUVs and other vehicles pull out in front of me. (Several close calls.)



So, I installed these Philips DayLight 8 Luxeon LED Daytime Running Lights inside the FTP lens modules by Dremmeling out the back clear lens and using mounting tape to install the LED lights. The lights fit perfectly with just a slight downward tilt due to the step in the lens module. The photo was taken on a very sunny day, so their brightness looks less intense than they are in reality.

I chose these lights over other brands because of the integral heavy aluminum heat sinks in the lights. So far, I have made several 2 hour plus trips with the lights on all the time and they have remained very cool to the touch.

Philips has since come out with an LED light with a light "tube" powered by a single LED bulb that I think might look better as a straight line illumination rather than the 8 spots of light. But the tube lights are more than twice the price and are not yet DOT approved.

These are simple to install. You connect the wires directly to the battery terminals and the module senses the change in current when the car is started and the lights come on. (After about 2 seconds the lights go off when the ignition is turned off.) It works great! A third orange wire can be tapped into either the side marker lights or the headlights to automatically dim the DRLs when your headlights are turned on. I have not done this yet, but plan to.

I imagine I will get water into the open backs of the FTP lenses, and will have to drill a drain in the front of them. So far, I haven't driven the car in the rain, so I don't know for sure.

I am very happy with the lights and have not been cutoff again since I have installed them. Oh, and since they are fairly flat, the FTP still works as well.

Only downside is that they make the old headlights and fog lights look very yellow in comparison.
