So it's physically attached to the ECU, but there are no wires connecting it?
That makes it pretty tough to guess what it is.

My guess is it's for the stock electric fan. The TII harness has a plug for a fan controller (according to the shop manual) but there's nothing there. It's likely something simple and bobo like that .

The US wiring diagram obviously makes no mention of this box. I honestly don't remember where in the JDM vehicle I have this was plugged into, but I may get curious and go poking around the front clip thats STILL in my driveway (hint hint) and see where it was plugged into and where those wires went.

I didn't know I ended up getting a speed limiter with my car... Any info on losing that "feature" ?

Actually, you didn't. One person mentioned that disabling the shift light was as easy as pulling the light bulb (which was a *duh* answer given for humor I think ), but the only other post related to the speed limiter was someone asking a question about whether or not some random and generic screw of the myriads on the back of the gauge cluster would be the key to this. Hence my question, which was, admittedly, a sidebar to this topic.

I have some pics of the clip already posted somewhere, I've got a FS thread posted in the appropriate area if you want to poke around. I'll take some more shortly if the weather holds and I can find my camera charger.

It's a possibility, but AFAIK the electric fan system is the same in Japanese and US cars, and the US FSM wiring diagrams show the fan control module in a different location and with a different sized plug.

You must have missed my post then

The ECU receives a speed signal from the speedo. Removing the screw disables the signal, hence disabling the speed limiter.
Logically, since the US cars never had a speed limiter, there won't be a wire from the speedo to the ECU, so the limiter in the J-spec ECU will not work. And pulling out the "shift up" bulb is the best way to disable it.

Ah. I totally did miss that. I even scanned the list twice looking for it. And I don't have a shift light anyway (s5 'vert).

Bringing this back from the dead, because I have the same question!

This box was on the side of the ECU (slipped onto it), and has a seperate plug that goes into the interior harness....

Did anyone ever figure this out? I'm guessing it isn't essential to running.

Ah, no...

Why would the Mazda fit a FCD to defeat the factory overboost fuel cut?

If by "E/L" you're refering to the "Electrical Load" system that compensates for the alternator's load, that's built into the ECU.

It's a seperate box in FD's, but not FC's.

This can be cleared up in a matter of minutes IF you will write down the numbers written on the units and write it down as stated on the units. That means with the same spacing as is stated on the units. The pictures are NOT clear enough for one to see what the numbers are. We need more than N3A1 or N3A2.

Another thing that would have helped is the color of the wires in each connector and the number of wires in each connector. BUT just the full numbers should do.
