j-spec: Can I drill EGR exhaust passage?
I previously swapped my intake onto the Jspec motor, and then found out I have no exhaust at the EGR valve. I understand the block passage is not drilled. Has anyone ever drilled the passage to get exhaust to the EGR? I'm of course failing the Calif. emissions test when they do the EGR vac. test. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Since one port of the EGR passage goes into the combustion chamber I would be leery of drilling with the engine assembled. It would be very easy to get shavings into the internals.

Hm. What are they testing for when they do the EGR test? Just a certain amt of vacuum on a certain nipple? Could you "simluate" an EGR valve? I don't know what I'm talking about, but it's a neat thought experiment.
Could you detail for us exactly what they test for?

In California they use a vacuum pump to open the egr at idle, and then look to see if the engine either dies or slows down a specified amount. The egr is pretty hidden, and you could drill a hole to allow outside air into the intake when the valve opens. However, outside air will not slow the rpm's enough - it only looks like you have mostly blocked passages - which will fail you. I'm thinking of a) pulling the intake back off and seeing if I can figure out where the exhaust source is supposed to come from and drill the j-spec block, or b) providing exhaust directly to the back of the egr with brake line type tubing from the exhaust pipe to the valve. It would really help if anyone else in Calif. has figured a fix to this issue.
p.s. We're supposed to be going to "enhanced" smog in two years which involves a dyno while testing emissions. I believe a non-functioning egr will fail that test for sure.

ok you need to set your smog guy straight.
1. the egr valve open at idle will not cause the car to run rough, the passages are small
2. it only uses egr in 5th on the highway, it has zero effect on the emissions that they test for.
3. to drill the passage would require dissasembly of the engine, or replacement of the rotor housings with us spec ones (in japan they use the same rotor housing from 86-91, here in the usa we get one rotor housing for 87-88 and then the j spec one for 89-91)
