Right now, at least at the shop I went to Friday afternoon, R12 was $35 a can (pound, and 2nd gen RX-7's hold 1.5 lbs) and R-134a is $9.99/lb at the autoparts store. I can tell you that I have R-134a in my car and it froze me out on the way to the race yesterday. Then whatever problem I had that made my a/c cut out intermittently became not so intermittent. At least I know the compressor works and I have coolant in the system, now I just have to retrace out all the wires that power the climate computer. :P

Not to get off the wonderful subject of R12 and R134a but this is the only a/c thread I've seen in awhile. I've already retrofited my system and it works cherry. The only problem is that the fan and/or the ducting sucks! The air coming out is super cold but even at full blast, it barely blow my hair if I go close to the vents! The worst part is that the fan SOUNDS like its blowing a hurricane through the vents but only small breeze comes out! I've owned 4 S4 fc's and they've all been like that. Has anyone found a way to make it stronger??

Has anyone thought about moving the condensor?? I only bring this up because my car has a 3-row intercooler and heat is a bitch in Hawaii also and my car runs at about 95-100 degrees Celsius on the freeway. I was only thinking of lowering it flat between my IC and radiator below the oil cooler so that the radiator gets more air. The only thing is that it wouldn't get the best airflow as it is flat but maybe making a small duct for it. Just a thought because we always talk about heat but don't really talk about a/c and heat cause most people already took theirs out. I know, I should've made a new thread but this has been on my mind so I thought I'd throw it in...

dude, my air moves really fast. On a hot day it hurts my eyes on full even with my discharged AC system. You prolly have a hole somewhere in ur ducting or are missing something. For instance my car came with a piece of ducting in the storage bin that hooked up to the passenger foot vent, which when installed increased air velocity some.

The air in my vert blows decently well, i know what ya mean though. Compared to newer cars they dont work that well. Out of the 2 fb's i owned the one that was an gsl-se with 44k original miles and museum quality didnt blow hard at all. However the gs i had with 134k on it would blow your hair all over the place. I dont understand why some rexs are like that but i will agree with you on that almost everyone ive encountered had a poor blower volume. Someone may have done something to my 84 gs to make it blow hard, i never had the time to check it. But it blew just as hard as my moms lincoln ls. It would be nice if there was an aftermarket solution to make some sort of fan or blower to make it blow harder. ive tried all the cleaning things and making sure everything is air tight methods and nothing ever worked. I guess its just a characteristic of these cars and a few people have the luck of getting ahold of one that blows well. Oh well

You might try to clean your evaporator out if the air flow does not seem up to par. If you've never cleaned it out before, consider that you've fifteen years of leaves, twigs, cat hair, dog hair, human hair, dirt and filth laying in the evaporator core. It's blocking the air flow.

Or if your fan does not blow as much as the fan in another RX, then consider that there is probably a resistor burnt up on the blower housing. It's at the top front of the housing. I've long since forgotten the exact name/location. I had that problem on one of my cars,.

hmm..when I get my 7 going again...I will definitely have to check that out Hailers...as ours did not blow hard at all either. It was nice and cool right at the vents...but if you sit back, you hardly get anything!

Thanks.
