Talking It's alive!!! Well, sort of :)

Well, I finally got the rebuild fired up, and I've noticed a couple of things, and anyone's free to help answer if they can:

1) it was rather difficult to start and took a LOT of cranking, then all a sudden it just caught and vrooom, away she went. It stayed smoothly at 1,500rpm for quite some time, then I let off the gas and it stalled (doh)

2) on the restart, I decided to hold it around 2500rpm to try to burn off the excess marvel oil (god DAMN what a smoke show!) and for some reason it seemed to hickup, it'd idle smooth for about 5 seconds, then it'd get all rough and drop in rpms to about 1000 and start to vibrate a bit, then it'd smooth out about 10 seconds later after that (has gotten better recently?)

3) just how *much* smoke am I expecting to be normal? I kind of did go a bit overboard with marvel, but god damn that's a lot of smoke!

Any help?

Smoke is normal for about 15 minutes, and a bit of residual for an hour.

Don't mind what the idle does for the first couple hundred miles. Run it high for about 30 minutes, set it at 1500 and leave it until much later.

Non-starting at first is due to the fuel system being empty and requiring priming.

We made sure to prime it, and it seems to do that even afterwards, crank crank crank then vroom instantly start up, occasionally (when it was acting weird) it'd start up and rev up VERY slowly to around 1500 where it's at now. It hasn't ran for a full 15 minutes yet, probably about 2 5 minute runs, the cops drove by at 2:00am and gave us some dirty looks so we called it quits for the night. It appeared to have started clearing up considerably already. Kind of curious as to why it was occasionally choking and acting up. Gonna let it idle for quite some time tomorrow and see how it does.

To begin with run it up to 3k and hold it for a few minutes, then drop it to 2k for a while, then it will smooth out, then drop it to 1500. It will really act a fool for the first little while, pay it no mind, just keep it running, keep an eye on your gauges, keep coolant full, watch for leaks, check **** out, etc. After about an hour of tying up loose ends, go for a drive.

Alright, I've got to replace the master cylinder before I can take it anywhere. No leaks yet thankfully, but quite a bit of air in the damn coolant (figures). I'm gonna set it up to about 2500rpm for about 30 mins, then drop it down to 2000 for 10-15, then let it sit at 1500 for a while just until it smooths out and will behave enough to take it for a spin. Going to be a bit strange with such a small window of RPM to use. Damn n/a has me rpm crazy.

Well, it's smoothed out alright, and gave me a hell of a scare. For some unknown reason it decided to pull the geyeser effect on me and fill up the overflow, which I'm not quite sure why. The car would run for 5 minutes without a hitch, then it'd start acting up. So we ran the heater, turned it over a bit without the EGI fuse in and it sucked it all back in, then started it up with the heat on full and it's been doing good ever since, idles pretty good at 1,500 (shakes a bit though?) The turbo was glowing red (yikes) for quite some time so we adjusted the timing as best we could to get it to cool off, and it finally stopped smoking. It was making some pretty kick-*** smoke rings for a while when we realized the damn neutral switch wasn't hooked up and the stupid car was trying to run stoich with the idle Going to attempt to take it to work tomorrow if I can get the master fixed.

Good deal... The glowing cat might just be timing.

Glowing cat? I have no cats! It was the turbo & downpipe that were glowing, we advanced the timing (since we can't really adjust it, and I figured since it was glowing, retard it some as it's probably running too lean) but that just made it worse, so I turned advanced it and it smoothed out the idle and made it stop glowing, either way it's running pretty well at the moment. Still a pain in the *** to start however.

I still am not quite sure why it's starting so weird, it'll start and it'll sound like it's running at about 100rpm, then it'll *slowly* climb it's way up to the revs. Probably should restab my CAS tomorrow when I fix the master and see if that does any better.
