Intermittent tachometer
I searched, but couldn't get a narrow enough result. The tach on my 1989 S5 dies. The car keeps running fine. When I restart the car, the tach comes back, but eventually dies again. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Doug

Well in my experience, the connection on the back of the cluster isn't making full contact. It may be plugged in, but it wouldn't be a long shot if that may be a possibility. I took the cluster out when I had exactly what you are experiencing, undid the connections and replugged them in. Problem went away.
Another possibily could be the harness is going bad?

Too old for this
Probably a bad connection. If it isn't the connection on the back of the cluster, it might be the one on the coil. The tach takes it's signal from one of the wires on the trailing coil. I forget which one, but you should be able to look it up in the FSM.
