Intermittent spitting noise caused by rapid application of Throttle???

When I am in neutral or have the clutch in and push on the gas to rev, every other or every one out of 3 times it makes a spitting noise I don't remember hearing when I first got the car. If I had to say it was coming from somewhere I would say front left of engine-bay but I had my passenger window up so I don't really know.

PS. a spitting noise is like "phfft"

Let me guess -

Does it happen just as the tach passes 3500-4000?

Does your dash boost gauge work?

My car won't build boost correctly my cats just ate themselves I am assuming, last week. So the stocker gauge is reading only 1/4 boost at WOT, because it is probably only building 1/4 boost.(Just as a test I am not at WOT ever really since they choked up because I don't want to hurt anything.) The spitting is at low rpms mainly. Around 750 1250 it will do it if I just blip the throttle. Could this also have to do with the clogged cats?

I am going to get a nice painting mask a mallet and a screwdriver this week. Clogged cats = major suckage on a TII.
