starting to get frustrated with electrical issues but love the car too much to give up yet
only one speed wiper, high beams at one point not working (fixed) logicon dead ( resoldered still dead), horn works sometimes (resoldered ECU still sometimes works but not always), idiot cluster sometimes works (resoldered still sometimes), and my most resent one https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/weird-voltage-isisues-problems-364756/

since the above one listed in the link I took the wires going to the alt off one at a time and soldered them rather then use the crimp that I was using. started the car did fine went to work. got off walked to my car no start. let me tell you push starting your car at 30* is fun.
when I try to start it and it is being a bitch I can hear like a mild click and then a very pitch noise kinda like you hear when the tv is on but muted.
click it a few times nothing more often then not but somtimes I get lucky and it starts.

I'm at a loss even more so being it will sit there and not start then all of a sudden it starts to kick over the motor without wiggling any wires or anythign like that
also when I try to start it the voltage on the volt meter in the car does drop to around the 9 range on the volt meter like it always has when the car is start just it's not kicking over

could this be a start issue or something else going on ?

I would test the starter...If you turn the key get nothing or a grind, sometimes even repeating that, and then all of a sudden it fires up next time you turn the key, it is possibly the bendix gear not spinning out...usually it's the solonoid on the starter gone bad. Other things to check, make sure your battery cables are in good shape and clean them with emory cloth or something...make sure grounds are in good shape and the starter is hooked up good and tight. If you get erratic voltage readings with the car running, it could also be your altenator going, so I would test that.

I actually have a problem similar to that, but not quite as bad. Sometimes when I turn the key to start it, nothing will happen except I hear what I think is the fuel pump. When that happens I just try it a time or 2 and it starts normally.
I haven't figured out what it is either, though. Have you checked the actual ignition switch? It seems like there could be something wrong with it.

I haven't checked the switch. though wouldn't it not even attempt to start, no noise, no loss of batt voltage and such if the switch went out?

I have had a similar problemn on 2 different cars - turn the key and everything goes dead. Both times it was the starter/bendex. There's a great deal at https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hlight=starter I ordered one on Monday and got it on Friday
