Intercoolers: Greddy vs. HKS vs. others..
All:
Ok, I'm serious about buying a front-mount intercooler after hearing detonation (air/fuel is fine based on previous dyno session where it detonated there too) the other day in 4th gear at the higher rpms. My car has always seemed weak at the higher speeds in 4th (above 105mph), which I attribute to the boost creeping all the way up to 15psi where I know for sure the stock intercooler is becoming a heat transfer device instead of a heat dissipating device.
Anyway, I've heard that many people don't recommend the Greddy intercooler kit because of fitting reasons and the core being so narrow that it doesn't allow enough airflow to the radiator. I'm leaning more toward the HKS kit. Expense is not an issue considering these two. I want the best fitting (meaning no air condition or power steering pump or bumper trimming have to be removed) and best flowing capacity intercooler.
I would like some comments on those who have had HKS intercoolers or any other type of intercoolers (Blitz and Apex-i would have to require fabed pipes which I'm not really gung-ho about..)
Thanks,
-M

WOW, a To4E on a stock TII I\C
You need to do somthing fast, I think the best bang for the buck would be the greddy 2 row! But having an upgraded turbo i don't think the turbo inlet pipe's will fit with out modifacation?? So spend the extra money and buy the three row kit! the pipes are bent for a 20g TDO6-SH.
The HKS FM is sweet! but your going to need refinance you home to get one.

I was going to do the spearco or mpr route but when I got a estimate on how much it would cost to get the pipes made etc I was told it would be over $900!
What we need to do is get someone on the forum that has done it, spec out the pipe (dimisions and bends) and post it here. If someone can do this then all we would have to do is go out and buy the intercooler and send the spec's to someone that can make the pipes for us!

What's the difference between the three row and the HKS kit? Also, concerning the inlet pipe, you are correct, that will have to custom made or removed..

It's nice to see more second gen guy with cash to blow
The greddy three row is a huge I\C! I'm pretty sure it's bigger and thicker than the hks, greddy shows on thee websight www.greddy.com that the three row cooler will only fit there turbo kit!
The fitment of the cooler and the intake pipe are not the problem! the turbo outlet pipe might not fit due to diffrent manifold angle's, the TD06 kit comes with an adapter for the stock TII manifold flange to bolt up to the mitsu flange. If you get this cooler you might need to have a 8" pipe bent to fit from your To4E to the rest of the greddy piping.
There are many third gen guy with the two row running single's that are vary happy with the kit, the three row is the ****!!
I was going to buy that kit but ran into a Apexi GT spec core from a GTR skyline just as huge as the greddy, plus i can weld my own piping. Don't buy a NPR, it's a stock I\C of a truck super thin it's like 1"3\4.

has hks updated their kit since 86? ive seen the original kit and its so/so. the car runs warm all the time (its got a big rad and fan too) and you still have to cut the car to fit the kit.

Well, I'm skipping out on the Greddy. It seems that the intercooler kits are only available for the 89-91 models for the FCs.. The HKS kit is designed for the 86-88 models. I'm really leaning toward the HKS now. Anyone want to steer me away from it? Anyone even HAVE an HKS intercooler kit?

If you aren't, detonation is where the combustion chamber explodes during either a compression stroke or an exhaust stroke. In other words, when its not supposed to combust. When this happens, it creates enough heat to cause meltdown or breaks seals in the case of the rotary.
2 main causes of detonation:
1) Not enough fuel.
2) Intake charge temperature is too high. (here's my problem due to the high boost and stock top mount intercooler location). A front mount will remedy thisand allow cooler intake charge to lower the temps.
