intercoolers

i am doing an engine swap from a 12a to a13bt. i recently came across a really great deal on an intercooler.the problem is that its off of a 2001 mazdaspeed mp3.now is it true that intercoolers are pretty much universal ?how much will i have fabricate to make it work ?or am i just better off spending the cash on one that is made for the car ?

Intercoolers are like radiators in that they perform the same function universally, but their dimensions and construction vary depending on the application. Therefore, you could use any intercooler with any engine, but performance and fitment are in question.

I haven't seen the stock MP3 intercooler, but given the small size of the aftermarket MP3 intercoolers that boast a larger size, I would consider the stock intercooler much too small for a 13BT.

IMO the aftermarket intercoolers for the RX-7 are overpriced and not designed well. I recommend that you use a custom made intercooler that fits the dimensions of your project. I am partial to Spearco intercoolers, but there are other good brands available. If you are looking for somethig cheap, the used Isuzu NPR intercoolers are a common upgrade for an RX-7.
