Intercooler Plate

I've got a question about the aluminum plate on the bottom of the intercooler. Why is it there? Has anyone ever removed it? Advantages? Disadvantages? Thanx

Its there I beleive to direct the water when raining that would come in the intercooler scoop behind the engine while driving.

I think it's a heat sheild.... motor is hot. you don't want the IC to be.
