i have a 89 gtu what would be the best intake for it.

I also have an 89 GTU, I put in an APEXi intake a couple of months ago and it is made to fit the old air box attachments perfectly. I will be getting a headlight with the NACA style air scoup to feed the fresh air to it eventually and it works great. Right now I am using the OEM air feed to the air box I removed to add air to the intake area . It is easy to install, the workmanship was perfect for the FC and it came highly recommended from Rotor Sports Racing since it doesn't reguire oiling.

Im a fan on the K&N kit myself, but only if you can get it cheap. Otherwise customize your own (like I will) with a K&N filter (I have all the supplies and it'll cost me $50 bucks.
